[This is exactly the opportunity Kiritsugu had been waiting for.]

[Until now, his most promising plan had been to dispose of the chief of police, but really, Kiritsugu knows he has no way of doing that yet. Even if he were to succeed, losing a man in that position did little the last time it happened. However, to take charge of the role would ( Read more... )

[Speaking of shoddy priests...

Despite their past history of unbridled antagonism, there was one thing Kiritsugu had earned from Kirei: simply put, respect. Respect that had waned at the end of the fourth grail war, when he'd seen the other man as a broken husk. For the man called Magus Killer, whom Kiritsugu had acted more in the manner of the few times they had conversed in Mayfield? An enemy, certainly. A diametrically opposed existence? Yes. But he was still one to be respected.

It was to that extent Kirei answered the phone, voice betraying no more antagonism than normal, indeed it held a hint of curiosity.]

...Truly, would this be a wise course of action? What would you hope to gain from this, Emiya.

[Oh, you're not getting anything.]

[While Kotomine's thoughts towards Kiritsugu are reciprocated in the belief that his enemy will be fully capable of putting the pieces of his plan together, this also happens to be the exact reason he doesn't feel at ease saying anything the priest may use. Kirei's dangerous enough as it is.]

[He wants to lie to him but, much to his chagrin, Kotomine knows him better than anyone in this town. He wouldn't believe that Kiritsugu's doing this for selfish reasons.]

There's no reason to divulge that to you.

[A light "Hnf" -- the closest thing to amusement the priest seems able to vocalize.]

Nor is there reason to refrain from doing so. Well, save prejudices of the past, I suppose.

[Not bitter, merely correcting himself. Frankly, he expects most conversations with Kiritsugu to go this route.]

I am merely curious. Though I sincerely doubt you take such a path for personal gain, I find it difficult to fathom precisely why you believe it prudent.

[Kiritsugu briefly contemplates the verbosity Kirei has acquired in ten years. Unlike the hollow man he had once deciphered him as, he truly seems to have the purpose he and Shirou talked about. All the more reason to find a way to dispose of him quickly.]

[However, he realizes something. Depending on Kotomine's disposition towards staying in this town, he may very well be as much of a threat as he was back home. After all, Shirou's no longer around to stop him, and Kiritsugu doesn't have Avalon to protect him anymore. There is the matter of no longer having a vessel for the Grail around, but considering how unknown Kotomine's current personality is to him, that is not a decisive factor.]

...Do you have any intentions of leaving Mayfield?

[Kirei is silent for a fairly long time before answering. Ostensibly, he was choosing his words carefully. In actuality he was running various scenarios through his head, attempting to gauge the other's reactions to better respond to them.]

Mayfield, is a diversion that has overstayed it's welcome. There are no plans of my creation that would benefit from a further prolonged stay here.

[Now that the grail of Makiri was no longer here, was the unspoken addition to his declaration. In truth, with Sakura Matou's presence Mayfield's only redeeming feature revolved around the existence, if in part, of Avenger. With the departure of both her and a handful of Heroic Spirits -- fuel for Avenger's birth -- what little luster the town had for Kirei was rapidly fading.]

[Yes, he's hating the fact that they have the same goal. This makes Kirei an unpredictable element in Kiritsugu's mind, since he has no idea when to pay attention to whatever he's doing.]

In that case, have you taken any steps towards leaving?

[He's still incapable of believing he's talking to Kotomine. Before coming to Mayfield, he had only spoken to him once, and only to speak of much more grave matters. Kiritsugu's not used to having conversations like this with any of his targets, dangerous as they may be.]

[Well. It seemed this gamble was at least paying off partially. Though he doubted he was truly being downgraded from "threat" to "wild card", the fact that a cordial, if terse, exchange of words was continuing was well within acceptable parameters to be considered a "success".]

Merely the acquisition and sorting of information. Time does not seem to be an issue here; considering factors such as the constant threat of loosing one's will, I felt it prudent to know as much as possible before making even one attempt to leave, lest I trigger reprisal.

[Kirei really did get wordy over the years, huh...]
