"Life is a series of disappointments ending in one really big one."

At least he's got someone to (sort of) take care of him (as best as she can, considering...) through this one, though. I don't care _how_ interesting and awesome and distracting "The War Games" is, it is almost certainly going to remain the most depressing regeneration of the original series, as far as I'm concerned...but whatever. It's a suck situation anyway you slice it from this side of a regeneration. But the getting to the other side is what makes the show so unique and fanTAStic, so I'll take the bad with the good.

Yes, of course Adric had a relative in his first serial. And, technically, so did Dodo, and I'd be willing to bet Leela did, as well. But I specified that we met some of Tegan's relatives _after_ her first serial. Her family wasn't just there as background to introduce the character; it was more like New Who, where the Companion is actually part of the Doctor's "family" enough that HER family gets visited from time to time (which is further supported by the fact that he actually purposefully takes her to visit her grandfather. He wasn't much for taking requests back in the day, and he _certainly_ didn't purposefully take anyone "home" unless one or both of them were ready to part ways. It was generally pretty easy to tell back then when one of the contemporary Companions was about to leave, because that was about the only time they wound up in modern England.)

Yeah. I just meant, Adric is up there with Nyssa and whatnot among the ones in your list that _don't_ count. For the relative thing, I mean. :P

As for Tegan, YES..._I_ said that at the time, more or less, do you remember? About how all this meeting the Companions' relatives (even for only one episode, which is still very rare by the classic series' standards) and GIVING them any family at all, suddenly made it start to feel a bit more like the new show! I'm pretty sure I made that comparison...way back when we met Auntie Lavinia, at least, if not when we met Nyssa's dad not too long after also meeting Adric's brother...

And incidentally: If you want to spoiler-proof something for me, just say it's New Who in general! That'd do it. You don't have to use the word _casting_. Just, New Who. But this "If you know you know" thing could've applied to somebody you/we really like appearing on, say, Pushing Daisies, Neil Gaiman having something to do with the next Discworld live-action miniseries, something involving Pirates of the Caribbean...

Just let me know what UNIVERSE something is a spoiler for, is all I ask. :P

> I just meant, Adric is up there with Nyssa and whatnot among the ones in your list that _don't_ count.

Well, they "don't count" because they _did_ have relatives appear on the show after their first serial, but in "doesn't count" sort of ways: Susan's grandfather being on the show several times is obviously is not the same as Tegan's grandfather showing up later in the series, Nyssa's father _technically_ "appears," but _it ain't actually him_, and Sarah Jane's family appears in spin-off material after she has returned to her home time/place permanently.

> As for Tegan, YES..._I_ said that at the time, more or less, do you remember?

Yup! I really guess I should have credited you for some of these ideas... There are still, of course, significant differences between the treatment of relatives in the two shows, but 80's Who does definitely move _toward_ New Who in a lot of significant ways.

> And incidentally: If you want to spoiler-proof something for me, just say it's New Who in general!

I guess I just assume that everyone else assumes that, unless otherwise noted, the nonsense in this journal is Who-related. In any case, there are _so many_ varied reasons why I don't want you to even know that there IS news...and even explaining _that_ risks spoiling things. You are in a very unfortunate place at the moment, as someone who has not been keeping up with the new series but is still somewhat active in the community, and really the faster you get caught up, the better it will be. Which is not to say that you should rush through anything - I'm obviously against that - but...I'm worried about your appreciation of certain things, put it that way.

> But this "If you know you know" thing could've applied to somebody you/we really like appearing on, say, Pushing Daisies, Neil Gaiman having something to do with the next Discworld live-action miniseries, something involving Pirates of the Caribbean...

I was intentionally keeping it extremely vague there, since I MUCH preferred that people _not_ read it if they were able than have anyone who SHOULDN'T know read it. It was a time-dependent "you know if you know," and it wasn't meant to make sense to anyone except those who were expecting me to say something right then. One day - hopefully later rather than sooner - I'll be able to fully explain myself. For now, I'll just apologize for the annoyingness and hope that it's not necessary again in future.

Well, yes, I was saying I _agree_ with you on the relatives showing up don't count, thing. I was just saying Adric should've been on your original list and you forgot, that's all. And this has now been _way_ too much discussion for what was originally meant as a picayune little side-note. :P

In other things...

1. You're still STRONGLY, totally against the Doctor being female, huh? (hangs head) Sigh. I thought I had at _least_ talked you down to grudging open-mindedness, or at least understanding why OTHER people would believe it could _work_ that way, by now... Sigh.

My answer, in case anybody is reading this? It's a complete _genetic_ resequencing every time. Sex is due to genes. There you go.

I know I'm evidently NOT going to get Magrat here to agree with me, or even admit I have a point, but I just thought you should know that I do _have_ a reason for my opinion, beyond "it'd be cool", "If he can change, let's see a REAL change before the end, dammit!" and basic "girl power" reasons. Which are, of course, still in effect. But I'm saying I also have a "scientific" technobabble one. :P

2. I don't care what race she actually is, DO NOT NAME A CHARACTER "ROSITA" THIS FLIPPING SOON. I have spoken. I know they recycle names, but you're supposed to _wait_ at least a bit! And Rose's Mary Sueness, plus their concentration on her is just bugging me. She is _not_ the be-all and end-all of Companions for the new series, guys.
...okay, maybe for cheap ratings, as in you can count on a lot of people tuning in if they hear "ROSE IS RETURNING! ROSE IS RETURNING!!" but she's not like, actually the best _character_...
(And I know NOTHING about the person who might be playing Rosita--obviously, since I keep trying to avoid spoilers (and failing miserably), so I didn't know what she looks like.)

Okay, so I can't actually stop them naming a character "Rosita". I can, however, BANG my head against the desk, and _groan_, and put it down as yet one more thing about the new series that bugs the _crap_ out of me. Seriously, guys, this is _Who_. It's supposed to be awesome. Stop pissing me off.
(This would be very very minor of a piss-off, compared to COMPANIONS ACTUALLY DROOLING OVER THE DOCTOR RIGHT ON THE FUCKING SHOW and KILLING OFF THE DOCTORS' ENTIRE RACE just to make sure the new kiddies don't get confused!, but...)

3. I got the Dr. Horrible, but haven't had a chance to watch it yet. It does seem, however, that this version does _work_ at least.

4. Tell us what you think of Planet of Fire or whatever it is you've seen last in Classic Who, dangit!

By the way, sorry about the overall bitchy tone of that message--I guess I was in a bad mood or something.
...I'm not taking back anything I said about the show losing its precious platonicity that made it unique for 26 years, or what I think about the _real_ reasons behind the Time War, though. Those, are not due to a temporary bad mood--I've been pissed about those things for a _while_ now.

Anyway.
