I had this great Torchwood dream - I was apparently Gwen, and everyone was perfectly characterized, and it was fairly interesting (mostly because everyone was perfectly characterized - there really wasn't too much going on) - and then I woke up from the dream and thought, "Hey! That would make a good story! It all actually made sense!" And then I woke up from THAT dream and realized that it would have made sense if the SUV were crowded with junk and there actually had been a special 15-minute bonus episode between "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" and "Sleeper" featuring a mechanic named Carlos. Not to mention the fact that I really need to write some original stuff.
So, they seriously need to stop torturing The Doctor. And they seriously need to stop "killing" characters only to bring them back. And they seriously need to have explained how Jenny died but didn't a little better (I think it was the 15-hour loophole and she just repaired her heart, but it took me three weeks to figure that out). And SciFi seriously needs to stop tampering with the episodes. If they really HAD to cut out material, they should have axed Martha's pointless and melodramatic rescue rather than important information establishing background and setting up references in later scenes. She didn't just come out of the machine named "Jenny," and we do get a bit more explanation from The Doctor about why he was so peevish through the first half (and Donna further proves how much more open minded she can be than The Doctor sometimes).
But all that aside, I loved it. It was adorable and touching, and the sci-fi plot underneath all the gimmick was really neat and well executed. Jenny had the potential to annoy me (OH so much potential), but she stayed just this side of that line. Of course, the only reason I really have to like her as much as I do is her connection to The Doctor and what she meant to him, but I'll take that for now, so long as she gets more development later.
Also, I know Alice Troughton isn't Patrick's daughter, but how AWESOME would it be if she were? Oh, Pat, you are missed.
And speaking of Two, it appears for now that he's safe in his position as Back-up Doctor. It's not that I don't love Five (I do), it's just that he hasn't grabbed me yet. I guess it's because I expected to love Five, but I didn't think I would particularly care for Two, so when he turned out to be AWESOME, I had already fallen in love before the first episode was over. I didn't get any of that pleasant surprise with Five.
Also, he doesn't have a Jamie to play off of. I tend to like characters more because of how they interact with their close friends than because of individual personality traits. Five has three great Companions, and any one of them could be really close to him if they were alone for a significant amount of time, but, unfortunately, that never really gets to happen. It's possible that he'll usurp Two in time, but really I just seem to have made room for Five rather than him shoving anyone else aside. Yay for Doctors who can share! (Query: Will this conciliatory nature of Five's, in an ironic twist, make me love him more and lead to a coup?)
I was all excited because I found a recipe for banana cookies, but they are rather disappointing. The icing is delicious, though, and I'm probably going to keep eating it until I start to vomit. I think I'll use it on sugar cookies in future.
