Five thoughts after watching the eleventh and twelfth episodes of The Batman

1) ARGH.  I was hoping for a more Simone-esque "Bird of Prey."  Guess I should have known better.

2) HAHAHA WOT?  Reporters in 2005 were still using video cassettes?  Why am I skeptical of this?  Also, I guess Gotham *would* have a variety of strangely-outfitted restraints to hand, given Bats' rogues gallery, but did they really have a Lecter muzzle ( Read more... )

Haha! By the way, did you know there's an episode of Brave and the Bold featuring the Birds of Prey (in which, among other things, they get up and sing a WHAT THE _HECK_ HOW DID THEY GET _AWAY_ WITH THIS IN A KIDS' SHOW? oh wait they didn't*--song at a nightclub)...that IS written by Gail Simone?
She's also one of the writers on Young Justice, too, along with Peter David, if that might further convince you to join the dark side. ;)

This is a comment on the previous entry but...wait. Dan Castanelleta playing SCARFACE?! Wow. He was one of the both sadder and more _disturbing_ villains on The Animated Series. (And one of the many, MANY I hadn't even _heard_ of before I watched the show. A comics expert, I am not.) I...can see that casting. Wow.

Gotham...had the lowest crime rate in the nation. Excuse me while I go sew my guts back in after laughing them onto the floor.

The technology not seeming to match or make sense was one of my main problems in The Animated Series...only the OTHER way. See, the whole style, _everything_ about the look, totally makes it look film noir. Well, Tim Burton's version of film noir. (Speaking of, I still think my favourite version of the Joker might be Jack Nicholson; don't hit ME.) It's not just the way it's drawn, but the fashions and cars all seem to be no further ahead than _maybe_ the '50s.

...and then Bats pulls out a VHS tape what. (In the early '90s, when _that_ show was made, it would've made sense.) I'm not sure, but I think it was at least three or four episodes in before I _saw_ anybody using technology that was modern at the time, and BOY did it clash. I had kinda thought I was _actually_ in for a cool film noirish series from the time period when Batman started, so I was a skosh disappointed.
(This is partly why I want my imaginary JSA cartoon--where, after saving the world in those goofy thrift-store costumes with total earnestness and pride, the brash young superheroes have reporters shoving _radio microphones_ into their faces. I want something that actually takes place in a long ago era even when it presents problems in writing. NOT just to _look_ cool.)

To be fair, they never once actually _said_ that Batman: TAS takes place in the '40s, true.

As for Brent Spiner's version of the Joker...he's actually only been in one episode so far. I'm not quite sure _what_ I think, except that it's a bit different and will take some getting used to. Young Justice is now, I think, overdue for episode 19. It's taking them _forever_ to even get ONE season's worth out.

Anyway.

...Notorious

*According to TVTropes, that time they DIDN'T get the crap past the radar, and the episode was _banned_. Although maybe only in some places, I dunno.
