A Canadian Question

Mar 17, 2012 01:21

This is a legitimate question that I figure someone out there knows the answer to...why is there no basketball on canadian tv? I was shocked to learn that they don't show the ncaa tournament at all after already hearing that there's very limited NBA coverage. By comparison, England, China and the Philippines all have significantly more hours of coverage per week.

Canadian excuses again (don't just tell me it's because canadian sports are better) my theory would be that it's because the main broadcast stations are all government-owned and they prefer to promote nationalism via showing sports with some sort of "Canadian flavor" like hockey and curling, and no private station exists that could afford to pick up any of the rights.

It's kind of a shame because there's a lot of good basketball players coming out of Canada nowadays, especially Toronto - Tristan Thompson, Corey Joseph, Kevin Pangos and such, most of whom end up leaving the country in their early teens because there are few decent programs in the country.

Maybe one of these days we'll see Simon Fraser in the NCAA tourney.
