Pah, I've been rejected ! I must admit as you may have noticed in my previous posts that typing is not my best attribute (what is I'm not sure, comedic drunkness probably doesn't count as an attribute).

Yup. "Everyone" is singular. Has to be "his hand" or "her hand". The problem here is the English language which has no gender UNspecific singular pronoun for just this case.
Because of that lack, one has to say "in his or her hand" to be correct and that just sucks. So while "their" is grammatically wrong, I think it beats the correct usage and I do use "their" (when no English teacher is going to read it).
