Green Crochet HDC/StarStitch Mitts
Green mitts, Acrylic, worsted weight, H hook
Foundation row(1): Chain 31 plus 2, hdc in third ch from hook, and in each ch across, ch 3, turn
Star stitch row(2): draw up a loop in 2nd ch from hook, draw up a loop in 3rd ch from hook, draw up a loop in back loop of first hdc, draw up a loop in back loop of second hdc, 5 loops on hook, yarn over and draw through all 5 loops, ch 1 - this is the 'eye' of the star (first star stitch done), *[draw up a loop in the eye, draw up a loop in the same stitch as the last loop of the previous stitch, draw up a loop in the back loop of the next hdc, draw up a loop in the back loop of the next hdc, 5 loops on hook, yo and draw through all 5 loops, ch 1] repeat from * across(15 star st), 1 hdc in back loop of last hdc. Ch 2, turn.
HDC row(3): hdc in back loop of star, hdc in back loop of eye, hdc in last hdc. Ch 3, turn.
Rows 4 through 7: Repeat rows 2 and 3
Row 8: 5 star stitches, hdc in same back loop as last loop of star stitch, 5 slip st, ch 1 (raise to hdc height), hdc in back loop of next hdc, draw up a loop in the 'eye' of the hdc, draw up a loop in the same back loop as the hdc just completed, draw up a loop in the back loop of the next hdc, draw up a loop in the back loop of the next hdc, 5 loops on hook, yo and draw through all 5 loops, ch 1, 6 more star sts, hdc in last hdc, ch 2, turn.
Row 9: Work 16 hdcs in the top of the star st row, ch 5, hdc in the hdc at the other end of the thumb shaping, and hdc across. Ch 3 turn.
Row 10: Work star stitches across hdcs and chains, hdc in last hdc, ch 2 turn.
Row 11: HDC row
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until piece is long enough to meet around the widest part of your palm. For me this is a total of 15 rows. Join edges with slip stitch (or sew edges together with a blunt needle).
Make a second mitt.
Reverse shaping for thumb is as follows:
Row 8: 8 star st, (hdc in same back loop as last loop of star st, I'm wondering if I should leave this out?) 5 slip st, ch 1, hdc in back loop of next hdc, draw up a loop in the 'eye' of the hdc, draw up a loop in the same back loop as the hdc just completed, draw up a loop in the back loop of the next hdc, draw up a loop in the back loop of the next hdc, 5 loops on hook, yo and draw through all 5 loops, ch 1, 3 more star sts, hdc in last hdc, ch 2, turn.
