Just finished crying, even long after the final episode of Soukyuu no Fafner, and damn - that was a good series. T____T Thank you again,
lina_lau, for introducing me to it! ♥
It started fairly slow, and I do admit I was quick to judge it as an overly serious and melodramatic version of Megami Kouhousei (Candidate for Goddess). But as the episodes went on, you'd notice that there was so much more. Faintly at first - but before you'd realize it, the story would reveal itself like a Matroshka, spinning further and further and dragging you deep into the Fafner universe.
The character development was great, too~~! When Kazuki first appeared he seemed just like your stereotype confused-boy-in-mecha, but he's definitely grown and gained a lot of sexiness during the second half of the show X3 - leaving space for Soushi to be unexpectedly cute XD.. I'm not sure if I prefer SoushixKazuki or KazukixSoushi, but it's these reversible pairings that I like most anyway :D...
I also liked the girls really, really much. It's been long since I was rooting for a female character in mecha anime like I did for Toomi, but she's so sweet and insightful and just kicks ass - neither Lacus nor Lunamaria nor Silvia made me go "ZOMG" like this XD
The parents-children concept surely added depth to the character interaction and tragedy. At first the killing-off just seemed strained and random, but later when Sakura collapsed just after Kenji and her were so sweet together - that was mean. ;__; And after that I kept wincing and hoping that everyone would be safe till the end, but - nya DD:... The last episodes had me crying like a baby..and the great usage of cuts and (lack of) music finally turned me into a sobbing git XD;;...
The final episode. Wow. It was a great idea to make it double-length, so they could build the appropriate tension without feeling rushed or packed. The pacing was wonderful, making you bite fingernails in excitement over the fight and calm down (still anxiously) when Tsubaki-chan prepared for her "revival", which was terribly touching, too: the always smiling and emotionless "core" suddenly acting like a human girl clutching onto a mother and crying "I'm scared..", wah, that was quite unexpected ._.
The SouKazu ending... ASDJHAJSKDHK. I did anticipate it, but in the end I still had to cry over Soushi ;____; AND NOW I NEED THE OVA. Give me my SouKazu!!!
I definitely must look for the soundtrack, too, which was fantastic. Some parts sound like modern/romantic piano concerts, and I've always been a sucker for that XD
