Rita Update

Sep 23, 2005 13:07

EDIT: Rita is now a Cat 3. But it won't hit land until the morning, and hurricanes gain power over night.

So Rita is no longer a Category 5 hurricane, it is now a Cat 4. And it is suppose to land east of Houston, which means that the Clear Lake area should be okay. We hope. We will get less storm surge, less wind, and less rainfall on the west side of the storm.
Mom and Laura are camping in my apartment with the Pets (that “aren’t here” wink wink, nudge nudge), and we are hunkering down to sit out the hurricane. It took them less time to get here than is could have, becasue mom avoded driving on the freeways. For those of you who haven't heard, the evacuation of the south houson area has caused the worst gridlock in US History. It takes more than 24 hours to make the 5hr (4 if you speed) drive to Dallas. People are running out of gas all over the freeway, because they can't get off to fill up their tanks. The gas stations are running out of gas. The grocery stores are out of water and canned food. People have been getting into fights over the last can of pie filling… like you can live a lot longer on pie filling than without it.
Other than the runs on food, water, and gas life in college station is almost normal. They canceled classes today, and moved the football game.
Laura and I went to the game. It was a blast! I think a lot of the game was people who were worried about Rita trying to forget about it for a couple of hours. But you have never been to a football game till you’ve humped it.
