This comes from the Author of The Invisible Hook. While I find the article to be interesting, and look forward to reading the book, I can't help but disagree with the original premise.
I don't believe that the Somali pirates are blacking the name of pirates of old. Lots of people seem to think that calling the Somalis pirates actually lends them some romantic mystique. Calling them "bad guys," "thieves," or "hijackers" doesn't capture the maritime aspect of these crimes. Saw a letter to the editor that argued that these men were actually terrorists, but that doesn't fit either.
So I have decided to call them "Bad sea dudes."
