In general I like Washington DC better than New York, and that goes double for the metro.
DC's metro is cleaner, brighter, less rat infested, and the cars are arranged in a more comfortable way (I have recently discovered that, like other DC-ers, I do not like have to look at people while I am riding the metro. It makes me uncomfortable.), and I have never seen a homeless person in DC declare to an entire train car that he is homeless and needs money to buy food please. However there are at least two things that i like better about New York's subway.
First, the subway system is so extensive that there isn't anything that is more than a few blocks away from a metro stop, and the web or metro access extends to everywhere you would ever want to go.
Second, there are a lot more advertisements on the Subway than there are on the Metro. This may seem like a negative to you, but that just means that you have not experienced the joy of ads declaring "Need a life change? Become a Franciscan monk!" Seriously. With more room taken up by ads in the New York subway the chances of coming across some truly wonderful ads are much greater.
And just imagine the service that these ads are doing. A hegefund manager is down in the dumps, having lost his job in the financial mess and he was only provided with a measly million dollar severance package, as he rides the metro back to his multi-million dollar flat he happens to look up. Suddenly he understands. His life is good again. He has nothing left to lose, so he will become a Franciscan monk.
It's the new mid-life crisis.
