To Severus' surprise, it was he, and not Lily, who fended off hexes in the hallways. He, who sat alone at dinner. Previously, he’d been the expert on the wizarding world; now Lily acted as his guide.
"Partners?" she’d ask in Potions. Slytherins and Gryffindors watched enviously. Afterwards, Potter hexed him.
Was a sunny smile all it took?

She was always kind. "Never mind," she said, when Mum’s knife broke. "I’ve an extra one."

Lucius eyed him shrewdly. Mudbloods haven’t always been able to exchange pounds for galleons, he said.
