*sighs happily* -- Just as good, if not better, on third reading. Little touches like "old sayings" from the wizard world add such density and texture.

Thanks so much, Kelly! It was a real push to write this during the semester--I don't have your organizational skills yet--but I spent many an hour daydreaming about this world. M.

Lovely! So canonical, and with such a great sense of Muggle historical context - Minerva M. here has a real 1930s young woman's voice, to my ear. What an amazing story! Wow!

And (I say this with the glee of great-minds-think-alike! rather than the spirit of niggling) it is especially nice to see the Amelia-Earhart-as-witch idea so gorgeously developed here, as I wrote a drabble on that theme ages back, and always wished for more ... and look! my wish is granted!

Oh, fabulous about the drabble! Would you link me? This whole story took shape after I was talking with some students--women in their very early 20s--about the concept of "post-feminist." It got me thinking about why I saw change happening more slowly than they did and about women role models, and, well, one thing let to another. I love the idea that there might be a whole genre of Earhart-as-witch fic out there!

Both the fic writer and the historian in me are delighted to hear you enjoyed. Thank you! M.

Here you go:

This is series of linked drabbles but the Earhart one comes early on - maybe #6?

That's so funny! Great minds think alike. *g* And clearly, Amelia does things wholeheartedly.

I adore the other drabbles, as well. (How could I pass by drabbles with footnotes?) Ginny interrupted. "Oh, no, Mum told me why. When they made it, everyone figured the first-years couldn't count up to ten." Hee! M.

I *love* this fic, Maggie. It reads to effortlessly - and I say that to you in particular because I know sometimes the writing doesn't feel that way when you're in the thick of it. But really, it reads like it just came out all in one thought. Gorgeous narrative.

Minerva's backstory with Walburga certainly lends a different light on canon events. And Myrtle! And the war! And Hooch's dad covering Essex with semi-detached houses out of grief! So much to enjoy here. Thanks!

L, I can't believe that I'm responding more than six months after the fact, but someone just left a comment on this fic that made me realize I hadn't replied. I'm so glad you liked it! I actually enjoyed writing this one (or at least never went through my usual period of hating it). More Minerva/Walburga coming up this fest season, by the way.

Thanks for always being so supportive! *hugs* M.

This is wonderful, and I'm so impressed that you managed to write such a rich, gorgeous story in the middle of the semester. I was going to say some of the same things as dear onehundredmoons above, so I'll just repeat... the war! the backstory! the semi-detached houses!

I love the way you dramatize the subtle interplay between friendship and erotic love, for Minerva/Rolanda and Minerva/Walburga. It's a friendship fic and a femmeslash fic, and I wouldn't even know which to put first.

Also, I'm intrigued by the theme of running away from the wizarding world to the Muggle world, which I've often seen in your fic (recently in Sirius's fantasies of escape in the small_gifts fic), and which plays into my own earlier dabblings in thinking about (if not actually writing) HP fic. Why are we drawn to this alternate magical world, and why does our own world come somehow to seem like a more attractive escape afterward? (Food for thought... doesn't have to be answered now.)

R, I can't believe I'm responding six months late--this is a first, even for me. But someone left a comment the other day that led me over hear and made me realize I'd never finished replying.

It's a friendship fic and a femmeslash fic, and I wouldn't even know which to put first.I love that you said this; it's exactly what I was trying to get across. To be completely honest, I probably don't know enough lesbians to generalize with any authority, but I feel as if I've seen this dynamic over and over with f/f couples--this fluid back and forth between friendship and romance--and I was trying hard to recreate it here ( ... )
