So the
master list went up at
rs_small_gifts this evening, which means we're closing the books on the fourth annual year-end R/S exchange.
Hard to believe I'd just discovered fandom in the fall of 2006 when
busaikko wondered why there wasn't an R/S exchange--and then rather sensibly suggested we could organize one ourselves. How have three years gone by so quickly? We had another great year, some 63 participants and 85 gifts given in the exchange and--this is the number that amazes me--3300 comments lefts on gifts. Now, I know about half those comments are folks responding to feedback, but still: roughly 1700 times, someone hit "leave a comment" and offered a bit of feedback and support to authors or artists. And the comments kept coming in all the way through December, and through our bonus round in the first week of January. Fandom is a wonderful place sometimes.
It's funny, I talk so much about small gifts at this time of year that even the better half--who is not a big fan of fandom, generally, and always wants me to turn my computer off--has absorbed enough to write a drabble. Keep in mind, she's never read a line of fic in her life but may have absorbed some attitudes from me:
Title: Christ-mass Appeal
Author: The Better Half
Characters: Remus/Sirius
Argh! Yet another one!
What is it?
Another fic ending with us kissing!
The last time I checked, you and I both liked kissing.
Yes, but we don’t need so much writing about it.
Why not?
Because it’s never as good as the real thing. Better to focus attention on the conflict, the intrigue, the reason. There needs to be a point to all this kissing.
You mean some kind of social commentary? An examination of socio-political forces?
Exactly!
Bugger that! It’s new year’s. Let’s give readers what they want. Come here, Sirius, and snog me like you mean it, for no reason.
Oh, all right. But, I have a reason-it’s the beginning of a new decade, for heaven’s sake.
I wrote two fics this year, both about the act of storytelling:
Title: The Devil You Know
Characters: Remus/Sirius, Sirius/Snape
Rating: R for sexual situations
Warnings: *Underage sex, angst*
Word Count: 5100
Summary: As the old saying goes, better the devil you know than the one you don't.
There are many, many things I hate about my parents' house, but the view from the roof is not one of them.*
Title: After Life
Characters: Remus/Sirius
Rating: PG
Word Count: 3200
Summary: It might all be true here.
After two years behind the veil--two frustrating years of waiting and watching and worry--death is a delicious release.*
And I was lucky enough to receive a fic about about the political awakening of two twenty-somethings, with the winning extra of a savvy, activist Marlene McKinnon in stomping boots:
Crossroads by
nurturing_roads (Remus/Sirius, PG, 3800 words).
