This year's adventures were had by just Charlie and myself. We spaced things out over the entire 3 days so as to not DIE in the 30C+ heat (Who's idea was it to hold a con in Queensland in November?) I didn't spend the entire time filming panels and taking photos this year, so forgive me as I give a recap of what I can remember. Also, Charlie was on photo duty, so all images are her doing.
Friday:
Joe Flanigan's first panel was in the larger auditorium in the new Royal International Convention Centre. We got seats right behind the VIPs as we had arrived early and spent an hour in line defeating the alien zombies in Stargate Unleashed, attracting some onlookers. There wasn't really anything in Joe's panel that we haven't all seen online from previous cons before. He spoke about his attempts to buy/lease the Stargate franchise in order to produce a new movie and Robert Cooper blowing him off once the final scene of Vegas had been shot at dawn. He did some voice work for a video game to gain cred with his kids, though his character is killed off in the game. He rode in a fighter jet when some Air Force fans offered to take him up, and he attempted to 'go to space' as a promotional tool for the show, but Atlantis was cancelled before arrangements were finalised. He had a fantastic presence on stage and was warm and friendly in person.
Saturday:
Gary Jones' panel was first thing in the morning. So of course, no one was let into the convention centre in time, even though we all had our weekend pass bracelets, we were made to walk in the heat all the way down to the Marque and back to be allowed into the building. Gary's stories were about not touching the noisy keys on the keyboard where he sat 'dialing' the gate, and the inevitable tales of Chris Judge's olfactory afflictions. He was asked which of the cast was the 'hottest' to which he replied Michael Shanks, the questioner disagreed saying she prefered Rick, to which Gary objected "Not now!" cue superficial applause. He also spoke of his work in theatre sports.
Sunday:
We had a bit of a sleep in and arrived half way through the day for Joe's final panel. he was a bit jittery from his coffee, but very personable once again. He did repeat some of what he had shared on Friday, answered the ol' prank question with a tale of Jason mooning David from a moving truck, and shared his previous work experiences including working for a New York magazine wherein his boss commanded worship, and working under the Reagan presidency - during which he ordered pizza to the White House. He believes that the intent for further Stargate films was short lived and that TPTB perpetuated the rumour long after they knew it was no longer possible in order to garner the fans' support for Stargate Universe after the initial backlash against the cancelation of Atlantis.
And that's about it. The volunteers for the most part were really nice and helpful. The new location is ok, there's a bit of a walk between the convention centre and marque, and not much in the way of shade. But the costumes were fantastic as always and the atmosphere is a safe fandom space.
