Just a *quick* review because it's late and I am a wee loopy on the Stargate feels.
SG-1 encounters an Ash Eater in Egypt that devours any form of energy, turning people to dust. It's containment - the Pit of Sorrows, takes off into space with Sam and Teal'c trapped inside it, while Jack and Daniel race after to save them before they are devoured. The Ash Eater is headed towards two Goa'uld foes who both want the Ash Eater for their own purposes, but there is something even more terrifying at its destination.
Likes:
* Teamy goodness.
* JACK NAKED.
* DANIEL NAKED.
* Snarky banter.
* "Once you've had Jack, you never go back."
* Hera's amusement at the aforementioned snarky banter.
* Sam's complete badassery with Neheb-Kau & Kafra.
* Teal'c destroying all the 'toys' in the infirmary/torture chamber so that no one else would ever suffer the devices.
* The exploration of Goa'uld culture and in that having two well thought out baddies (everyone's an ex- system lord, eh?).
* The Ash Eater as a mindless evil, the perfect foil for the medium, far scarier in imagination I suspect than anything created visually.
* The dark tone of the novel that told of some pretty nasty stuff, didn't rely on the gore factor or go overboard with whumping the characters *physically*.
* The relationship between Hera/Pythia.
* Arekhat/Shenet's big gay jaffa love <3 (And that Shenet could possibly defy his god to avenge Arekhat).
* Using Jack and Sam's relationship as a metaphor to explain the astrophysical phenomena of matter in motion destined never to meet - I lol'd.
Dislikes:
* A good handful of pages came loose as I read the book, dodgy glue & press job.
* The Sentinel's purpose/creators/shady dealings with the Asgard. Don't leave me hanging!
* No conclusion to Laura Miles' story, though she was a side character, she had a horrific time of it.
* Daniel's lack of a twin. *g*
* For all of Hera's fancy listening gadets, she had little idea of the galaxy's state of affairs.
* Hera's ambiguous death, did she take Ericaceae as host or is Ericaceae playing the part?
* Some glaring grammar errors, just a few, but noticeable enough to distract from the story.
An excellent team centric novel, it felt a tad fan-fictiony in places what with the nude prison scene, but no obvious shippy leanings, every team member received a fair amount of story - Sam was far from the damsel needing to be saved. I enjoyed very muchly!
