So I've heard about the Canadian government's new revisions to the 'Marine Mammal Regulations' regarding their annual seal slaughter:
"The proposal would modify the three-step process (stunning, checking, and bleeding the seals) to prohibit the use of a hakapik or club for seals over one year old, to require sealers to verify death only through palpation of the skull and to require the animal to be bled for one minute prior to skinning."
These changes sound pretty useless, seeing as 95% of the seals that are taken in the hunt are no older than 3 months. They've eliminated the 'blinking eye test' that was a requirement last season. Also, the training for palpation is sitting the sealers down to watch a video on the practice.
This can only be in response to the European Union's proposed ban on seal products that come from cruel and inhumane methods carried out in the seal hunt. What a disgusting attempt to appease the EU and the rest of the world who disagrees with the hunt, so that they may continue to murder the remaining 10% of the harp seal population they had before...
