It’s after midnight and their room is dark. Donna sleeps next to him, tired after a day of the beach, dinner, and a night of fun; the hand that’s not curled around his shoulder is under the soft hotel pillow, arm stretched out straight, lengthening the line of her neck.

Josh is tired as well. But not so tired that he’s fallen asleep. It’s different from being exhausted from the campaign and the pressure and the work. This is vacation in Hawaii kind of tired, where it doesn’t add up day after day. If he listens hard enough, he can hear the sounds of the ocean from outside their hotel balcony. It’s relaxing, not the usual night sounds of the city or the road.

Donna lets out a small snore. He’ll remember to share that with her tomorrow. She’s naked and he can see where the sun is already turning her skin. He traces the lines in between the valley of her breasts where reddish tan meets her normal pale white. She shifts and he withdraws.

Tomorrow, they will be tourists. No one will know them as anything other than Josh and Donna.

He falls asleep to the sound of snores and muted waves.
