The front gate closes behind him, the sound of metal against metal distinct in the winter air.

He concentrates on putting one foot before the other, just one after another. Thinks that the day is over, and, for now at least, he can rest; for it has been a trying day, a long day, filled with memories all tumbling over one another in their haste to discover what is wrong. And there certainly is something wrong, something that is now defined by a psychotherapist and three words that get stuck in your mouth with their heavy meaning.

Bells ring to his right. Carolers singing in front of the fence. His head cocks to the side, like an animal focusing in on some distant sound. His eyes see the people before him, but his mind is slowly slipping away from the now. Like before, the broken glass and sirens that blur and blend with brass instruments until they become indistinguishable.

He’s close to slipping away, so close, so very close.

But his name comes from behind him.

He blinks, seeing the present before him.

The one syllable comes again and everything is alright for this moment.

She leads him away into the still winter night, his anchor amidst his troubles.
