Washington D.C.
The beige colored building loomed overhead. A person seemed so insignificant and so small in the face of its history and purpose. It was a surreal feeling to actually be here.
Deciding to join the FBI had come after a career in baseball. He’d enjoyed the sport, loved playing every minute. But something had changed in the recent years. The spark had left and a calling for duty and mattering to the world and making a difference had replaced it.
Graduation paperwork in hand, Don smiled as he entered the J. Edgar Hoover building.
Home of the FBI.
Home of his future.
Oath
Pavement stretched before them, illuminated only in the two a.m. darkness by the car’s front lights. His partner sang along with the radio. He preferred the humming of the tires when it came to the red head’s tone deafness.
Don shifted around in the seat, grimacing as something dug into his thigh. His fingers pulled out the offending object from his pocket. It was his badge and he traced over the familiar words that stood for: Fidelity, Bravery, and Integrity.
Suddenly Billy’s singing and all the odd hours didn’t matter.
As long as they were on the way to catching the bad guy.
Ethics
Don stared at the boy from across the table. The defiant glare registered nothing inside of him. He knew that Buck Winters was troubled. That he’d been taken advantage of and grown up in a less than ideal home. That some could argue that this wasn’t solely his fault.
He knew all of this, deep down inside of him.
But the only thing he saw across the table was Buck Winters, the boy who stood between him and a kidnapped friend.
Don rose from the table, left the room, and let Ian close the blinds.
All without a second thought.
Humanity
The coffee, blessedly, was still hot. There was enough to fill an entire mug with. It became an even better morning when he added his extras.
Don whistled as he stirred, sucking the reminiscent fluid off before trashing it. He made to go back to his desk, but stopped at the sight in the bullpen.
His team was all there. David, Colby, Liz, and Nikki all huddled together as they listened to Charlie’s explanations and waving hands. They were good. What they were doing - saving lives and making a difference - was good.
He smiled as he went to join them.
