I have studied music, culture, and people for years. I have been researching human behavior and psychology. I have taught hundreds of students. I have performed in America and abroad.
But for some reason, no matter what I am doing, I am not satisfied, not complete, unless I hear something that sounds like this.
What you are about to hear is the distinct, unique, and inimitable sound of one of the most musically-driven cultures in existence: Okinawa.
Okinawa is part of a group of East Asian islands close to Japan, but don't confuse this sound with the equally beautiful music of Mainland Japan. It is NOT the same.
If it sounds a little sad to you, that's the point. The instruments and clothing are meant to show a time in Okinawa when America took over after WWII. The Okinawans were so relentless about their culture and music after their islands were devastated that they created traditional instruments out of cans and other items.
There are far happier Okinawan tunes out there, but this one is very special to me.
Thank you for your time.
