kajmere, cuz she owns me.
"Jack?" Gwen asked as she came to stand beside their leader. He didn't give off any indication that her arrival had surprised him in any way, nor did it interrupt his surveillance of the scene below.
"Something you wanted?" He prompted when Gwen hadn't said anything after a few minutes. His arms were crossed over his chest, and he glanced at her, one eyebrow raised in question.
"I... Just something I'd been wondering... If I hadn't said yes to Rhys... If I hadn't married him... Would you and I have...?" Jack stood up straight from where he'd been lounging against the door frame. "- mean, back when you first came back from your time with The Doctor, you said-"
"I know what I said. I was wrong," Jack turned his head to look at her.
Gwen started to protest. "But-"
"I was wrong," Jack emphasised. He looked back down at the man he was watching, oblivious to the scrutiny he was under. "Saying no to Rhys, us acting on anything Gwen, it would have been the biggest mistake of my life."
"You said you came back for me, Jack," Gwen whispered, her eyes welling with tears.
Jack's arms fell to his sides. "I'm sorry. I lied."
Gwen watched as he walked out of his office and down the stairs to the man that Jack had been watching. As Jack put his hand on Ianto's back, the Welshman turned his head and looked up at Jack, adoration clear on his face before he quickly schooled his features. Ianto said something and smirked, making Jack laugh before he leaned down and kissed him, his hands cupping his cheeks to prevent Ianto from pulling away. When Jack ended the kiss, he pressed his lips to Ianto's forehead before resting his own against it.
Ianto frowned and pushed Jack back, standing up and lifting the older man's head to look into his eyes. Neither said a word, before Ianto pulled Jack into a fierce hug. Jack buried his head in Ianto's neck.
Gwen wiped the tears from her cheeks. Jack had been right, of course. He didn't come back for her. As much as she wished it were true, her place wasn't at Jack's side or in his bed. It was standing behind, gun poised, watching his back. Ianto was the one who would walk at his side, sleep in his bed and guard his heart.
Taking a deep breath, she reached into the front pocket of her jeans for the ringing mobile.
"Hey Rhys, love... Yes, yes, I'm on my way now..."
