Losing one's mind in old age is a horrible thing no matter the disease. Actually if you want him to have Alzheimer the one good thing is that once it's progressed it deadeneds your nerves so if you have pain like houses you wouldn't be in pain anymore but that's when you are a bit worse than he is here. Before that you have alot of nerve pain as they die :(

It is completely horrible - House's worst nightmare, really, in some ways. I didn't really think about the specifics of his illness in this fic, but you're right - no matter what, it's just tragic.
