I think I need some more information.
I read that the democrats agreed to let a few of Bush's scary fucking judicial nominees through in exchange for the "nuclear option" going off the table. Is it just me or is this incredibly frightening? I mean - the whole point of retaining the fillibuster is to prevent the political majority from co-opting the courts as well. But that's exactly what they're going to do regardless.
I understand that it was important to do whatever was necessary to keep the fillibuster as an important legislative tool, but this "compromise" is a bit much for me. In a way, I fear that this faustian bargain creates a situation in which the republicans will be able to muscle through whatever they want just by making dramatic threats. And in the end, the situation is less likely to come to the attention of the public (and come to a head) because it is a "death of a thousand cuts" rather than a single, obvious blow to the integrity of the nation.
And you know what? I don't think the "nuclear option" would have passed anyway.
