RP babble of the day...

Hey flist!

I have a lot going on in games right now, and I feel like I'm dragging at Marina and Eway a little, so kick me in the pants if you're up for doing anything with any of those characters or if I've dropped tags on you. (Also, some of you are probably gonna baww at me, but I'm still seriously considering letting Yzma and possibly Lain go.)

Oh yeah! And TBF's done it's turnaround plot, and so we've got some cool beans lined up and new NPC-age in, and if you're not in on Trial by Fire, I'm gonna keep plugging it at you. I definitely need to keep listening to feedback from our current playerbase, but we're hopefully going in good places with some new direction, and as I plow steadily through Dark Tower, we're hopefully gonna get to slip in a few more source elements 83

....Which is also not what I'd intended to banter at you!

I wanted to talk Character Ping-points, which has lately been my method of deciding what/how to tag in LJ RP for stretching into new CR areas. It's my recommended pro tip for staying active when you're juggling multiple characters, and get some time to focus in on the neglected ones.

Kelly, what the heck is a Ping-point, you say? It's my catch-all term for phrases, concepts, names, ideas, themes/motifs, interests etc. which frequently snag a particular character's attention. I jot them down on paper if I'm sitting around completely bored, but usually it's just a mental list of words that my characters will definitely have something to say about/get hooked by. Generally its stuff that's integral to their canon,  their interests, things they hold strong opinions on, things they're actively trying to know about. They'll typically change or shift around with development.

For example, Prydain (Replica, not_riku_thx ) from discedo 's primary pingpoints might look something like:
Gohl, darkness, greenhouse, the names of any close friends, memories, promises, apartment security routines, food/sundry resources, homesickness (vs. Discedo as his home), Hearts, lies, loyalty/dedication (protection), replicas/clones/twins/artificial life, Organization XIII, exploring parties, gym training, length of stay (in Discedo), self-reliance.... (the list could go on, but these are most of the major ones)

Chances are, if you make an IC post about any of these things, and if I'm active and on the ball with my flist as I'd like to be, I have....maybe an 80% likelihood of tagging you.

The aim to develop a set of pingpoints that fit well within characterization while showing up on a wide variety of other people's entries. Pingpoints should have some grounding in the game setting as well as the canon setting, as you develop a character into a game. You want things that are going to be relevant to the world you're in, not just the world your character's coming from. Once you have this mental list really well defined and familiarized, it's easily to scroll through and let things grab you.

On the opposite side of the coin, I find it's also a good idea to keep in mind, if you're struggling to get tags on your own entries, or if you're aiming to make CR with a particular character you know well and think is cool stuff and such, to try and make sure you bait them with things you're fairly sure are other characters' hotspot pingpoints.

Usually, when a muse is weak, I can only scrape up a meager list of pingpoints. But sitting down and rehashing them helps me wake 'em back up, sometimes.

...so It's sort of a simple concept, but that's generally my playing style on how I run with staying active. I'm always curious how other people think through their roleplaying, so...thoughts, comments, KELLY MAKE A PINGPOINT MEME NOW....I'm all ears.

Entirely Unrelated: Today at work, an absolutely adorable couple sat in front of me at the bar and proceeded to gush romantic chemistry all over the place. You know when you just see two people who are completely into each other? Ironically I am totally not the most sentimental person on the block, and public displays of affection usually leave me a little eye-rolly, but just...These two just kind of radiated mutual attraction. The guy was sort of scruffy and had really nicely inked tattoos of koi on his arms, and she had gorgeous hair and probably a little too much eye makeup, but you could have shoved them in a movie together. And it left me feeling sort of silly-giddy and pleased for them. A altogether weird sentiment from entirely left field, for me.
