Treme
a city that lives on the imagination of the world and a show you must give a try
(most probably not dial-up friendly)
The series takes place three months after Hurricane Katrina where the residents of New Orleans, including musicians, chefs, Mardi Gras Indians, and ordinary New Orleanians try to rebuild their lives, their homes and their unique culture in the aftermath of the 2005 hurricane. - wiki
after five weeks i finally brought myself to making this post. ever since the pilot i've been meaning to spread the news of this brilliant show. i could say that it's unlike anything i've ever seen on tv but i've seen four seasons of the wire already.
it's not your usual tv show, it's not about satisfying the spectator, if you don't know what second line is, david simon will not explain it to you because that would not happen in a real conversation among these characters. it's all about getting the atmosphere real and right. also, it's not a teleologically told story, you're not told about the aims of each character in the pilot and this show will not be about how they reach that aim. treme is about the characters and how they live their lives. and new orleans. most of all, the show is about new orleans. the music, the food, the culture and the music.
so if you're okay with all this, you should definitely give this show a try.
i chose to picspam the opening scene because it had me hooked on the show immediately. it created a perfect atmosphere that was insanely inspiring. the very first shots are extreme close-ups, there's no establishing shot, your eyes/thoughts have not much place to wander to. it's musical tuning and booze and lively chatter. with the first long shot we hear a group of people bargaining, talking about a parade that's now obviously coming up and about how much water they had. and then it's on. there's music, pretty colors and dancing. and even more music and even more dancing. and people enjoying themselves freely.
and yes. i worship at the altar david simon.
