Notes/Acknowledgements
I honestly never pictured myself actually finishing this when I signed up way back in January, but boy am I glad I stuck with it. J This is by far the longest thing I’ve ever written; I feel accomplished. J Nevertheless, I must give credit where credit is due. This story would have been doomed before it was even started if it weren’t for all of the AMAZING help I received from Tina, who volunteered to beta this monster and, whether she knew it or not at the time, put up with my many flailing emails. J There were so many times I was completely stuck and didn’t know where to go next, but after a conversation or two with her I was back on track again. I don’t think I can tell you enough how grateful I am! A huge thank you is also in order to my f-list for their encouragement, and to the many people who read over my story in its wee stages and gave me feedback. I love you all!
Next, THE ART. Oh my gosh, you guys. Wasn’t the art awesome amazing FLAWLESS?! I don’t think I could have lucked out any more to have been chosen by such a great artist. And based off of my horrible summary skills! I am definitely counting my blessings. Silvia, there isn’t one piece that you made that I didn’t absolutely adore. No lie. Thank you so much! I will forever worship the ground you walk on. J Be sure to leave her lots of love in her master post
here, okay?
Allll right. Now for a little about the fic J
This whole thing started off as a homeless!boys J2 AU, was erased and changed over to a Cold Case style fic where Jensen went missing, hit a severe road block because legalese is most definitely lost on me, and finally ended up as this. I’m pretty sure this story had a complete mind of its own, as it ended up totally different than I had intended it to. But, that said, I’m glad it did. J
The only thing that pretty much stayed consistent throughout its many different stages was the fact that there was going to be a deaf character. I am completely in love with all things Deaf culture, so, naturally, I had to include part of it in this story. J
For those of you who don’t know much about sign language, ASL is considered a completely separate language than English, with its own syntax and grammar and whatnot. For example, in ASL ‘WH’ words (who, what, when, etc.) are placed at the end of a question rather than the beginning, and one wouldn’t use the same sign for ‘run’ to say a sentence like ‘I need to run to the store’ and ‘I’m going for a run’. Words like ‘the’ and ‘is’ and ‘am’ aren’t signed, as every word in a spoken sentence is not always signed or can be expressed with one sign, and vice versa.
I mention this because some of you may have noticed portions where Jensen is signing and the word order isn’t what you would typically expect if someone were speaking it. I tried to stay as true to ASL rules as I could in the story, but I also wanted it to be readable to those who knew some ASL and those who didn’t (which is also why I used a combination of describing the signs and just writing the words signed - if I only did one or the other it would have become too overwhelming or monotonous).
Hopefully it worked out all right J
If you’re interested in seeing what some of the signs used in the story look like, or are just curious about ASL in general, you should definitely check out this site:
Signing Savvy. Just type in the word you want to look up and voilà!
** The title of this story, lyrics at the beginning of each section, and song playing in the video all belong to musical artist John Legend.
Man, if you got this far, congratulations. That ended up ridiculously long winded, but hey, what can I say? I just finished writing 25,000 words; I’m on a roll.
