Warmth
The cool, pre-dawn breeze raised goosebumps along Synara’s arms. The trembling of the flower in her tiny hand betrayed her minute shivers. She looked anxiously up at Mara. She had said they must be very still and quiet as they waited for the first rays of the sun. She wanted to show Mara she could be good so that she would want to continue to teach her. But Syn couldn’t stop the slight movement; it was so cold.
Mara smiled down at her fondly. “It’s almost time, child. Hold your flower out in front of you.”
Synara tried hard to copy Mara’s graceful pose, raising her left hand to the rising sun. Mara began to chant: a beautiful, varied intonation offering thanks for surviving another winter, asking for guidance and strength in the coming year. Syn thought she had never seen anything as beautiful as Mara’s face in that moment, the rosy light of dawn mixing with an ethereal glow from within.
After a minute, Mara nodded slightly and they released the flowers. She gasped as they hovered in the still air a moment before hers began to float gently upward with Mara’s following behind. She followed their path for as long as she could until she was blinded by the bright sunshine. She closed her eyes and visualized the flowers as they rejoined the Mother and let the warmth of the rising sun spread through her chilled body, answering a warmth that had awoken deep within her.
