Returns. Synara gets her first apartment.
Synara stepped through the door, walking to the middle of the spacious living room and stopping. This was so different from any place she had lived before. The light streaming through the glass wall was angled, reinforcing how high up she really was. The colors around her, white and black and grey steel, seemed to press in on her heart, sucking at the warmth of her blood and skin.
She heard a click and looked back to see Nate closing the door behind him. He beamed at her.
“This is perfect for you,” he said as he approached. She deftly stepped away, placing the leather couch between them, while appearing to be suddenly moved to examine the artwork on the wall. He had been pushing closer and closer to her since she had made the decision to move into the city, his intent blatantly obvious. He was an incredibly attractive man and Synara was certain that something would happen between them, probably sooner rather than later.
Just... not yet, she thought, idly fingering the chain around her neck, feeling the weight of the pendant warm against her chest. There was too much she still didn’t feel comfortable with in her new life. She looked around at the large, impersonal space and wondered how she would find her comfort here.
Suddenly remembering that silent reflection in the presence of others was considered rude in the cities, she turned back to face Nate. “Thank you so much for finding this for me. It is beautiful.”
“And it’s all just for you. No more having everyone in your personal space, no more dirt everywhere. Just private, clean, and beautiful.”
She tried to ignore that small voice inside that retorted that she would miss the comfort of being surrounded by family and friends, she would miss the smell of earth and rain, and forced a smile. This was the trade-off, the price she knew she would have to pay to leave that life behind. She could learn to love this. She would learn to love this.
