Italy (part 1)

May 04, 2008 12:52

It's 5 days later now, but here's the post I wrote for the first night I was here...and then haven't had internet since...

I'm in Italy, and it's beautiful.

We spent yesterday driving the Amalfi coast and swimming in the Mediterranean, and I am now a bright shade of lobster. I've been driving, since Cos cant drive a stick. When we went to pick up the car, I asked the woman if any of the road rules were different, and she said "we drive on the right." I feel like if I had been confused on that point when she handed me the keys, we would have had bigger problems...Cos asked her if you can make a right on a red, and she was confused by the concept of traffic lights.

I realize after a day of driving around all day, that at least in this part of the country they dont have traffic lights. I also realize that she must have been confused by the concept of "road rules" when I posed my question, as they dont seem to have those either. There is however, a complex language in horns, to express every possible car related action, not just anger as in the US. There are beeps for thank you, I'm passing you on a hairpin curve so brace for impact, etc.

It was a lot of fun, and our little Fiat handles better than anything I've ever driven. I now understand the "joy of driving" commercials. Not that I didn't like driving before, but his little thing is amazing =)

*hugs* and much love to everyone!
