OK, so when I am asked I always have the same response. I actually enjoy watching the show; I always keep in mind that it is a television drama and not some kind of attempt at a documentary. Honestly, the show is not that far off of some of the events or situations that I myself have experienced or had friends go through themselves. Yes, they are going a bit fast on throwing in as many cliché "military drama" examples into the mix but can you fault them? They are trying to build a TV show that could be renewed for another season and during this time of real life military turmoil that is a difficult task and a delicate balance. They want to draw in military and non military viewers yet they cannot alienate either audience. So why am I journaling about this; because I have a small bone to pick with them? I realize that they are most likely NOT getting any sort of support from the military but for crimity's sake there are a lot of seemingly small details that they are getting wrong and as I continue to watch they are beginning to irk me more and more. It’s the details that most people think are insignificant in nature; however to us TRUE LIFE military wives they mark the poignant moments of our lives.
What bugs me? The way they wear their berets! OMG, they are NOT supposed to look like muffin tops! They take hours of shaping, shaving, and molding to look right. And yes, real life soldiers are actually making this same hideous blunders but that is because when the government in the infant wisdom gave berets to everyone NO ONE ever taught them how to care and wear them. This was ALWAYS a right of passage for special ops so I don’t completely fault them; I fault their drill sergeants for not correcting these mistakes in basic training.
But anyways… it is the small things that drive me nuts. The “soldiers” who are wearing their ACU soft caps with the Velcro on the back but not wearing their name tape on it. The mixing of uniform details, some military honors being performed improperly, stuff like that. I know they probably have a military liaison for the show but when was the last time they served? There have been SOOOO many changes to uniforms, procedures, etc… in the last few years that it is even hard for active duty soldiers and families to keep up with the changes.
Perhaps I am annoyed b/c as a recently parted spouse I am still admittingly raw from his deployment. However I know I am not their only deployed spouse viewer so I know these same things are being noticed but others like me. And in a very small way, it kinda hurts.
