[ The video activates with a bit of a jostle, turning on to give a view of gold eyes before it pulls away and settles on a nearby surface. Now, Ed is fully visible as he goes about braiding his hair. ]

So, uh, 'pparently I had quite a nap.

[ A light snort and Ed reaches over to grab his wand. Giving it a flick, his hair continues braiding itself ( Read more... )

[ Blink. Blink blink. Holy crap that is a lot of hair. And Al says his hair is long... ]

Do what?

[ Can't speak. Too overwhelmed by awesome. She gestures wildly to her hair, mimicking... something. Possibly crab lice. Most likely a floating braid. ]

[ Opens his mouth. Closes it. Opens it again. Repeats his process once more as he tries to determine what the hell she's talking about. ]

My... hair? Are you asking how I did my hair?

Oh no! I've braided my hair before. It takes about five hours, so not too long. How did you... [ points, still smiling ] Get it to float like that? That's incredible! [ And the potential applications? Endless. Because while it is nice having her hair braided, it's terribly impractical. And now that magic isn't a no-no conversation wise... ]

Five- No kidding. [ Because, yeah with hair like that? He'll believe it. As for the question... he picks up his wand and twirls it in his fingers. ] Simple charm, really.

Sorry. I'm kind of new at this. I've never known anything like "school" before.

[ Never know "school" huh? Interesting. ]

Not a problem. I can teach it to you, if you want. A simple incantation. You got your wand?

Oh, my wand! Of course! [ And like another spastic blonde, she pulls it from behind her ear where it's had the unlucky job of holding her bangs back. ] There. What next? I'm Rapunzel, by the way. If you're going to be teaching me you should know my name, right?

[ Oh... kay. Long-haired girl is a bit coo-coo. But that's alright, he's used to spazziness (considering he's had his spazzy moments too). His brows raise and he gives a short laugh followed by a shrug of his shoulders.

Rapunzel, her name is. How fitting. ]

Alright, Rapunzel. I'm Ed. Don't really need your name to teach you, but since I got it anyway... Right. Now lift your wand like so...

[ Demonstrates a brief flick that he makes with the tip of his own wand. ]

Got it?

[ And Rapunzel, fast-learner that she is, follows his lead with near perfect imitation, her hand steady despite the humming excitement she gives off. ]

Got it.

[ Impressed by the rate she manages to pick up the motion, he grins more. ]

Great. Next part's even easier. Just use this incantation.

[ Carefully sounds out the phrase for her. ]

While I'm doing the flicking thing? [ And she can't help it, she laughs a little. The incantation is funny, and the fact that it causes things to happen is just puzzling. Rapunzel the scientist ever at work. ] I wonder what it is about the words that makes it magic. Would it still work if I didn't have my wand? And do you have to say it out loud?

Yep, while you're doing the wand movement.

[ Snorts a bit, even more amused by her analyzing. ]

More like the wand is a conduit through which your magic flows. By saying the incantation, you're activating that conduit. Wand movements guide the flow of magic. As for whether or not your incantations need to be said out loud... well, once you've practiced enough and mastered the spell, it's definitely possible to be done without the words. As I did, y'know. But that's more difficult and takes a lot of practice and mental focus.

[ Oh Ed. You're talking to the girl who's entire life is an exercise in practice and mental focus. How do you think she's still sane? ]

[ She mulls over the mechanics of this, her face scrunched in comical concentration and resolving to write down everything before reproducing it in brightly colored paint. The frown soon evolves into a smile as she raises her wand and, happily chanting the spell, puts her frying pan in the air in front of her. She squeals. ]

Do you know the light spell?

[ Sane is a relative term anyway...

Indeed, the comical concentration that she exhibits prompts another laugh from him, reminding him so very much of his and Al's own expressions they had as children perusing the complicated and fascinating notes in their father's study. And yet, they had been very young. This girl has to be roughly his age, though this can be accounted for by her origins, if his theory is correct.

Watching her, grinning as she gives the spell a try and managing it (now all she needs to do is practice it non-verbally but he knows how difficult that can be, even if he'd mastered it fairly easily), he twirls his wand in his fingers again while cupping his chin with the palm of his other hand. The shift, giving a glint of gleaming metal in the small space between the edge of white cotton gloves and the cuff of a sleeve, allows him to settle more comfortably while giving his wand another wave.

Without a word, the tip lights up. The simple lumos spell, accompanied by the hint of an arrogant smirk. ]That one, or were ( ... )
