Well, um. It's what the bad guys use, isn't it? And they don't teach it to us, so it's got to be pretty bad...

But what's stopping a good guy from using dark magic?

I think that it's really hurtful spells, the kind that a good guy wouldn't want to use.

But isn't that a bit too optimistic? Even a hero must fight.

If a villain and a knight were to fight, you'd hardly say that the swords are the source of evil.

Hmm. A hero needs to be able to fight people who hurt others, but, I think they have to do it the right way if they want to keep being a hero. It's like killing someone who's asleep, right? It's just a bad thing. You can't be a hero and do it; you have to wake them up and do it the right way.

That's how it seems to me, given what I know about magic and wizards and things. But... that's not really very much, I guess.

[Siiighs.] And this is what I was afraid of.

You can use a sword to kill someone in their sleep or to fight honorably. Black magic is no different. It's a weapon, but whether or not it's used evilly depends on the caster. Yet this world seems to want to blame the magic somehow. It can't decide how it's used.

Okay, uhhh...

[She's stumped him.]

There must be a reason, though, why they don't want us to use it, right? It's just not something we know.

Because it was used enough by evil people. Because some spells are too easy to abuse and people are afraid it will be. So a bias is made against the weapon instead of the wielder..

[He sounds a lot more unsure of himself now.]

So, do you think that we should be learning that kind of thing, in case we have to fight using it?

Oh, hardly my point at all.

I just don't like having to deal with any biases since I am a witch who regularly uses black magic.

Oh!

Um, hm. For what it's worth, which isn't very much... I think that there are good guys who sometimes do bad things, or even terribly hurtful things, but they're still good guys. You need to do something that's completely, irrevocably awful and unforgivable before you turn into a bad guy.

I'm not really particularly wise or anything, but that's how I think, and maybe other people think the same. Even if your black magic is really bad, it doesn't mean that you are.

Hm, don't worry. I'm not questioning if I'm good or bad. I know how I am.

But if I do something bad, I won't make an excuse that my magic made me. If I did it, it's because I did it.

And I won't lie. There are plenty of spells that can be used in terrible, terrible ways. But there's are also ways to use them for a great deal of good.

Just like any other weapon. A blade can be used to harm or to protect. So can magic. It's not evil, it's the caster that would be evil.

[He says nothing for a while, thinking about it, but at last says hesitantly:]

You seem pretty smart, and like you know what's what, so I guess you know what you're saying. Still, I don't feel like I want to experience any of that kind of magic if I can help it.

Of course I do. It's something I grew up with.

If you feel that way, that would be for the best. Part of my training was making sure I had a mind that would not be corrupted by power. Not because of influence of the magic in particular, but simply the usual folly of absolute power corrupts absolutely. Any magic can do that, since it can be so powerful.

If you're afraid to use something, don't use it. A terrified mind is more tempted by the darkness of it's own mind.

I'm not afraid.

[He sounds a bit sulky about that.]

It just... doesn't sound nice.

Uncertainty breeds fear, in my experience.

A lot about this situation we're in doesn't sound nice.
