In the letter, Dumbledore mentioned something about us having to defend the school. Also, this Hogsmeade place... wherever that is. It's all confusing to me.

Hogsmeade is the town nearby the school. From what I gather, the school holds occasional trips there. [Thank you, random history book in his office, for at least telling him that much]

As for defending the school, it is likely this world is being threatened by some force too strong for its inhabitants to combat alone. So the only option available to them was to gather help from elsewhere. As to what that force is, I don't know. But I will find out.
