Personality: Despite being visited by a fairy of music and being given a magical violin by said fairy, by all appearances, Kahoko Hino is a fairly typical person with very few strong personality traits to make her unique. She's a friendly and considerate young woman who never really caught the attention of others before her selection into her high school's musical competition. Before that change, her life hadn't been what one would call exciting. Nevertheless, it's all the small qualities that she does have that causes her to have an effect on the people about her.
One thing that becomes noticeable about Kahoko throughout the series is how much she's willing to consider the feelings and views of others. It's the passion, determination, and seriousness of the other competitors in the music competition that help to make her just as determined to try her best. Even when it was something as simple as mentioning her short-lived musical career and how she was only dragged into it, brought up when asked about how long she had been planning the violin for, she decided to refrain from answering too honestly and truthfully because of how shameless it would sound after all the people she personally ended up involving in it, especially when considering how little she had thought about the whole contest.
She can also get a little hot-headed or rash when it comes to other people, especially when she believes that a person is missing out and/or denying themselves something, and still does this even when she gets caught up in her emotions. A good example of this is the time when she hears Ryoutarou Tsuchiura playing the piano, but later learns he refuses to play it any longer despite the fact that she can tell he obviously has a talent for it. In such times she likes to try and be encouraging to the other to go through with their passions, even when she is still learning so much in regards to her own newly-found passion.
It doesn't always need to involve music, however; it could also simply be that she finds something wrong and wants to stand up or by the other person when she thinks they're being wronged by another. It could be trying to stop a fight from breaking out, to speaking up for someone too shy to do so themselves, for instance. She can't conjure up a cool and firm stance at such times, but never backs down nonetheless. Usually she gets out safely enough (with maybe with a challenge or scraped hand or something). Furthermore, her desire to help people isn't limited to when the person being wronged is in her presence, but even by hearing another person badmouth someone will make her stand up for that person. Despite the fact she's willing to stand up for people she's only just met, she does try to avoid any conflicts that might get physical (throwing water not included).
That said, she enjoys trying to get along with people and is all-in-all a rather simple girl. She has fun, makes jokes, sometimes teases, and becomes lost and unsure just like anyone else, with even selfish wants here and there. While being oblivious to some of the deeper held feelings of those around her, she does notice of how good-looking boys around her are and sometimes becomes flustered by their words, actions, and closeness. Still, it hasn't at all dawned on her the effect that she has had on other people, even as much as she might be aware to how people about her have changed.
Going back to being rash at times, it can also be by her own feelings and wanting to say what's on her mind. While not as bad as others who freely often speaks, Kahoko can at times be caught in the moment but often apologises for it immediately afterwards. They can be sudden ideas or remarks on how she perceives someone, though they're always truthful. One such moment was only after thinking about how good a person would be as a violin teacher that she blurts out the idea to him and proceeds pleads with him to allow her to become his student. It's only afterwards that she realises how sudden and random it must have seemed to say such things and becomes flustered (though it did work).
She doesn't always know what to do when she's being pressured or put on the spot, and this can lead at times to her running away and/or avoiding the situation as much as she can. She will try to fix and sort it out if she can, but she doesn't always know how to come up with the answers or what the right thing to do is. It's usually by the words of others that have helped her know what to do, and again shows how the feelings of others can affect her so much. From everything people have told or shown to her, she's keeps those things all close to her and learns something from everyone.
Without them, maybe the violin wouldn't have become such a big part of her life as it had. It might be safe to say that music plays now a good part in her personality, as she's learnt to feel emotion in someone's playing when she hears it. Likewise, her own playing can be affected by how she feels; even the smallest negative thought that can spring up and catch her off guard. She cares deeply for her violin and has become passionate about playing it as well as music in general, though she's hasn't gotten bigheaded over her playing. Even when magic was on her side, she still recognised her playing and the playing of others as very different, so when she was asked to give feedback on the playing of another, she felt herself unworthy to do so.
What your character can offer: There isn't much of anything that Kahoko Hino can offer in the way of physical strength or magical abilities, having either none or not enough to make a noticeable difference next to another person with untrained natural strength-- really, for a while constant violin playing made her sore! What she can try to do is to be a help in the more smaller of jobs, maybe helping out if the chance comes as she's shown in the series to get stuck in doing the odd chores for people.
In being around other people however, Hino will be able to give to them some support as is part of her personality. She's a person to try and keep her chin up around other people, and so while she'll only be so much help in the way of physical jobs, she could likely give some sort of boost to the mood of another.
What items will they be bringing with them? Her not very magical violin
Third-Person Sample: The wind had died down to a calm breeze for the day when Kahoko found herself on top of the rooftop she had stood on so many times before. It had always been a perfect place for practicing on if for a last resort or to avoid the fuss of booking up a practice room. It hadn't been her reason for going up, though-- she wasn't even certain what it was that took her up there until she arrived. No one else was there when she came up, and it stayed that way as she looked to the cool colours that now made the sky.
Ah... A new semester-- a new start? But it doesn't feel like that at all! The violin case had been unhooked and sat waiting on a bench, and she looked down to the instrument and bow that had been occupying her hands with a smile. Ousaki-senpai said my sound had become much better now, didn't he? And my bowing, too-ahh, even if I do still need to work more on them! That thought made her mood dip a little, but only for the moment it was on her mind. She put her violin to position against her shoulder, moved her head and put her chin to the rest. Just a single note, one before heading home...
A single note that turned into a collected few of drawn out tunes. From the first to the next, just to hear the transition of the two notes together. Maybe not enough to tell if it was any good, but it didn't sound that bad, did it? But it's not the exact tune I want, and maybe I'm holding this too--
What meant to only be those two tunes had unknowingly continued on, and her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a dull low note. T-that's...
She lowered the violin away from her and sighed. That was a horrid sound. O-of course, I knew it wasn't going to come so easy. When she had relied all that time on the magic of her last violin, the others around her had trained hard to get to the point of talent they achieved.
Still, even if I know that... Is it wrong to want to get better quickly?
It was with that question that she picked up her belongings again, brought on when checking on the time. It was a little earlier than the time she had first thought about stopping to, but not by much. There would be more chances to practice here, and that's all she could do for now, right?
To keep on trying.
First-Person Sample: [The voice feed clicks on to a new frequency, and there comes from it the voice of what sounds like a young girl speaking Japanese.]
Is this on? Hello? [There's some discomfort in the words, but for the most part the voice sounds 'normal', if a little quick in speaking.] Am I using this right? You told me to use it, so...
... This feels really stupid... [Those words seem spoken more to herself than the communicator. In the background, the sound of her footsteps can just be made out.] I don't know what's going on, but I think you've got the wrong person! So if someone could come...!
Hello?! [A shout more out to wherever she is than the communicator.] Ahhh... it's so much more colder than before...!
