CHAPTER 1

“Hey! Don’t you think you should be in a “special” school?! You don’t belong here. After all, this is a school for normal people and unlike you, the rest of us can actually walk!” a howl of laughter followed the string of insults that were all directed at the wheelchair bound boy who was making his way towards his seat.

All the boy did was let out a long and heavy sigh. He didn’t even bother saying anything in reply. After all, it was useless and it would only succeed at making things a lot worse for him.

At 16 years old, Jin was pretty much used to being made fun of. Ever since the accident, it became a normal thing for him to come home with a tear-stained face and another broken friendship. Apparently, children like him who are different don’t deserve to have friends…or that’s what his so-called friends used to tell him. The same people who used to hang out with him were the same ones who made fun of him now.

After a few minutes, their teacher entered the classroom. “Class, we have a new student joining us today” he announced, causing varied reactions from the students. Most were surprised, after all it was almost the middle of the school year and the school didn’t usually accept late transferees. Whoever the new kid was, he was probably someone special or someone rich.

Jin on the other hand simply let out another sigh “Another person who’d just end up making fun of me” he said to himself.

The teacher called the new student and guided him into the classroom. “Go ahead and introduce yourself to the class.” The teacher said flashing the fidgeting boy a reassuring smile.

“Uhm…etto…minna, my name is Kamenashi Kazuya. I’m a transfer from LA…Yoroshiku~” the boy introduced, bowing a little after his short speech.

“Alright class, I want you all to make Kamenashi-kun feel welcome. I expect that you treat him well and help him adjust. Is that understood?” the teacher asked the whole class.

The class responded positively making Kazuya sigh in relief “Maybe going back home wasn’t such a bad idea…” he thought.

“Kamenashi-kun, you can take your seat beside Akanishi-kun.” The teacher said, pointing to the seat beside Jin. Kazuya immediately took his seat and soon their Homeroom period started but Kazuya was more interested in the boy sitting beside him rather than in the teacher. He felt like he’s seen the boy before, he just couldn’t remember but there was something about him that felt familiar.

Before Kazuya knew it, two periods have passed and it was time for recess. He was still watching his seatmate when he noticed him making his way out of the classroom, carefully maneuvering his wheelchair around. Kazuya was about to follow him out but the other students were crowded around him. Looks like most of them were interested about him.

“Kamenashi-kun, how long have you lived in LA?” “Why did you decide to come here?” “Do you have lots of American friends?” “Are you single?” Questions were thrown at him by his classmates who were still crowded around him making him feel like some sort of star but he really couldn’t care less about them. “I’m sorry but I have to go the washroom.” He said, politely excusing himself and making his way out of the classroom.

Once he was out, he let out a sigh of relief, he was able to get away from his classmates, but he had another problem. Where would he find his seatmate? The school campus was huge, he was new, and he didn’t really pay much attention to the orientation given to him earlier to actually know his way around the place. He let out another sigh. “I guess I’m going to have to wait for lunch time to talk to him then…” he thought.

Since he really didn’t really know his way around school yet, he walked aimlessly and unconsciously he found himself in what seems to be the school garden. It was nothing much really, just a small space with a few trees here and there, but Kazuya found himself liking the place a lot. It was quiet and it looked like nobody else bothered coming there. He may not have found what he was looking for but he found the next best thing, a quite place where he could hang out and think.

The silence was disturbed when he heard shuffling coming from behind a few bushes. It seems like he wasn’t alone. Curiosity getting the best of him, he slowly and as noiselessly as possible made his way to where the sound was coming from.  To his surprise, he found his seatmate sitting on the ground right beside his wheelchair, reading a book, holding a bottle of chocolate milk in his other hand.
