I went to see Harry Potter and the Ha;f Blood Prince today with one of the girls from Jail.
OMG it's equal parts amazing and baffling.
- Remember a while back, when I had a crisis because I was worried they were going to give Draco the Dark Mark to show that he's eeevil, even though it's not in the books and also he's not evil he's just misguided? Well they did it, and I just about cried when I saw it. I know why they did it, because subtlety in respect of some of the more intricate and interesting plot points has never been one of the movies strong points, and they couldn't just show Harry thinking that Draco might have taken the Mark but not having any concrete proof beyond his own suspicions, sould they. The thing with the books is that Draco's allegiences are not clear, and they do not need to be made clear by stating explicitly that he has taken the Mark. So boo hiss to the movie for doing that to Draco. He's not evil, I'm telling you.
- WTF was up with the whole Bellatrix (an awesome dangerous/sexy/crazy Helena Bonham Carter) burning down the Burrow and Harry running out into obvious danger to avenge Sirius scene? It was kind of stupid. And it made Harry look stupid.
- I love Hermione. And I love Emma Watson as Hermione. That just needs to be said. I loved her in the Slughorn scenes, especially when her hair gets all poofy, because that just felt like a proper book reference. I also loved her scenes with Harry.
- This movie was funny! The love potion scenes with Ron, Ron's rockstar moments in the quidditch game when he thinks he's taken Felix Felices, Harry being hit on by pretty cafe girl... and best of all Harry's cocksure Felix Felices moments when he find Professor Slughorn in the greenhouses and then at Aragog's funeral ("pincers" was priceless).
- Loads of minor characters were namechecked and I loved that. Cormac McClaggen, Blaise Zabini (yay, Blaise), Leanne something or another. So nice to see them using actual background characters rather than inventing them - can we say Nigel, anyone?
- Poor Tonks and Remus... a whole relationship relegated to one "sweetheart".
- Pretty much the first thing Tanya said to me when the movie finished was something like "that was great but I think it might have made a whole lot more sense if I had read the book." It's so true. Just little things would have made a difference, like using the first potions lesson from the book when Harry presents Slughorn with a bezoar - that would have made the scene when Harry gives Ron the bezoar make so much more sense. They spent a lot of time in the movie foreshadowing the big things (like the vanishing cabinet), but not so much with the little things. Also someone asked me why Harry didn't stop Dumbledore from dying - why couldn't they have just used the petrificus totalus from the books?
- I love Draco Malfoy. But then you knew that.
- The effects were pretty damn amazing in this movie. So glad I got to see them for the first time on the big screen.
- It would have been nice to have seen more of the Riddle backstory. Especially as so much of the plot in book seven revoles around what Harry learns about Riddle in book six.
I'm sure there will be more... I just can't think of it right now!
