So I just finished reading this and it was very nice of Mr. Sanderson to post it online for free. He creates impressively unique magic systems, very different from any other series I've ever even heard of.
Anyway, I haven't decided if I'm actually going to buy the book. I might wait until its out in paperback. Still, I can't decide if I liked it or not. My favorite characters were Siri and Susebron, and it just figures that they get less attention than most of the other "main characters". Geeze, I always seem to take a liking to the wrong ones. Oh well.
I wasn't too fond of Vivenna. She was a bit annoying and stuck-up. People kept saying how impressed they were with how she adapts and perserveres, but I didn't see any of that going on. I saw her being a whiny, arrogant bitch. And then I didn't even get to see the happily-ever-after of Siri and Susebron in the epliogue because Vivenna hogged all the facetime.
I rather liked Lightsong, but I had trouble enjoying his parts mostly because I didn't like Blushweaver. Their banter was funny, but she just kind of pissed me off for some reason. (The mercenary humor was also pretty funny).
I liked a lot of the ideas that went into this novel, especially the magic system, the focus on colors, the twist on the typical sentitent sword motif. I also liked seeing the remnants of another era still living (reminds me of the Night Angel triology by Brent Weeks -- and I finally went out and bought all three today). In conclusion, Sanderson's world-building skills are phenominal, his romance was sweet, and some of his characters left something to be desired.
warbreaker,
