(apparently my post was too long for one comment)
*TACHELES* an old jewish department store - kind of like jenners - ravaged & raided by the nazis during the war. After the wall came down all the easterners fled to the west in search of a better life meanwhile young struggling artists & bohomeian folk took over this filthy derelict building transforming it into the raw, everchanging pience of art it is today. on the first floor there is a bar where live bands sometimes play -watch out for the fire breathing dragon! There is also a beer garden - surprise surprise - and a metal workshop filled with crazy sculptures. upstairs is a cinema & numerous artist studios. Out the back is where you can buy weed from crazy drunkards hiding in the bushes. be wary of the filthy stairs & rubble everywhere. There used to be a plane out the back but i read somewhere they set it on fire. If you see any cool graffitti or posters on the walls dont expect to see it again if you go back there, someone will have drawn over it before you come back.
*PLACES TO EXPLORE* *henrich-heine u-bahn station. you will be in the middle of Kreuzberg. turkish culture meets berlin. lots of dodgy fake designer gear. lots of quirky cafes. *S-bahn schonhauser allee(its on the ring). you'll be in Prenzlauerberg. walk down to the top of kastnien allee & you can get a tram back to hackescher markt & pass lots of cool little shops & bars. *Zoologischer garten. you'll be in the Ku-Damn a.k.a kurfursten damn. touristy because of the bombed church, not a nice place to be at night due to drugged up tramps & the museum of erotica. (unless you like that sort of thing!). in the europa center-near the big granite fountain- there is a water clock & not a lot of fantastic shops. *Fredrich Strasse. full of posh shops. beautiful modern buildings specially La Fayette, french department store with a huge conical shaped glass feature in the centre. *Alexander Platz. The big tower with the ball on it is the old east-berlin TV brodcasting tower. Go in the daytime & you'll see there's not much else to see.
I think thats it for now. If there's anything else you want to know i think you've got my e-mail - its in the yearbook. ALso if you want me to hook you up with some freinds out there there's carlos the big old bad ass from peru & jason crazy guy from french canada. they both speak english & german & french & spanish & portuguese & bad words in polish & russian so they'll keep you entertained.
Where else are you going? Who's going with you? I leave britain the begining of march to go to hong kong, New zealand, fiji & the eastern states of america. Cant find anyone who can come with me so it'll be me & my backpack.

Ah thank you so much, you're an angel! I'll print that information out, fold it up and keep it in a very safe pocket till i get to berlin. I'm going to romania for two and a half months, then it's all a bit up in the air, but if all goes to plan i'll be going to poland, germany, prague, possibly italy, the ukraine, and everywhere in between. Who with, I don't know. I'm in Romania on my own, but may be joined by other people for the travelling bit. Who knows. Hope you have a lovely time on your travels. Be careful though m'darling, those are a lot of far away & exciting places you're going to! Yep i think i have your email address - is it the yahoo one? I've packed my yearbook away y'see (moving house), so i can't check. When do you get back to edinburgh? Or are you living in England now? Carlos the big old bad ass and jason crazy guy sound charminglovely and wonderful, would be nice to meet them. Thank you so much for all your help, have a great time travelling if i don't speak to you before you leave,
