(written on sunday)
Okay, so internet access is proving somewhat difficult to get at the moment…I’m writing this up now so when I do finally get it I won’t already have forgotten everything that’s happened!
Rich came up to see me (amongst other things) on Thursday, so we had a kinda “last supper” with parents & Mark, which was a little sad but good fun.
We (my parents & I) drove down here on Friday morning leaving at 9:30 & had a surprisingly good journey. We spent the rest of the day exploring Brighton & I’m pleased to say I really am in l*ve with the place, I’m such a seaside addict & it has some ace shops & the Lanes are amazing…as is the pavilion…I’m certainly taking Little Liz there if she comes to visit! Dad was a bit foul tempered and he had a very scary dizzy spell where he also turned grey & lost circulation in his arm! Parking was a bit of a nightmare too but other than that it was a pretty good day, ate at an absolutely gorgeous Italian restaurant where the waiter seemed to think I was mad for wanting pineapple on a 4 cheese pizza..ho hum! Friday night was very odd, no longer living at home but not yet having a new home, I felt really lonely & isolated…especially since I still don’t have my phone back & working!
Saturday we went teapot shopping (obviously I can’t move in anywhere without a teapot), then drove me up to the uni for about 10:30, pick up my keys & moved in…sent parents shopping for food (with a list they failed miserably to buy everything off) whilst I unpacked. Discovered I’d managed to forget the hook for my mosquito net so room didn’t quite feel like mine yet, I’d also managed to forget all my plates & bowls! But I went to the engineering welcome (where they offered free tea & biscuits, so what student could refuse!) & mentioned I’d forgotten my plates & they’re lending me two plates! How ace are my department! So I came back to the house to finish unpacking. Then I met Katie from next-door, who didn’t know where the food shops were & had no food, so I showed her the grocery shops…and it turned out she was vegetarian, so I cooked her dinner…when she has real food she’s gonna cook me dinner too, anyway Katie likes Hip-Hop & talks lots, seems like a fairly interesting peep but has a tendancy to wander off & leave you on your todd. After dinner I started chatting to the housemates more (had had brief hellos so far but that was about it), we have:
My floor:
John: 23: Environmental Sciences
He likes U2, R.E.M. & some stuff like Ash, I think I’ve scared him somewhat coz I talked lots & he was a bit shy, but he seems like an alright (if somewhat dull) bloke, he’s from Bedford.
Emma: 18: Experimental Psychology
Likes Craig David, Will Smith & other pants music, again a bit shy but now seems to have made good friends with one of the girls from upstairs, has come from an all girls private school in Cambridge & is chirpier than most people in this house but still doesn’t have much to say about herself, is a bit of a blonde…I had to set her telephone & internet up for her.
Chen (although we’re not sure, he might be called Tim):20: Computer Engineering
Likes Chinese music & the Beatles, is having language difficulties in trying to talk to us, but I’m sure he’ll improve. He’s from China & has only been here for 2 months…is always off & about with various Chinese friends he seems to have. Is a bit odd, he cooked himself 3 microwaveable curries & a HUGE thing of rice all in the first 6-8 hours he was here!
Middle floor:
Kati: ?: American Studies
Haven’t spoken to her much, seems pleasant, but a bit of a townie. Has a boyfriend in Bristol (which is where she’s from)
Claire: 18: Rochdale (near Manchester)
Is doing Italian & linguistics (tho I’m not sure how with that accent!), has very little to say about herself, she plays the flute & likes tigger…she’s been nattering to me tho. She’s teetotal.
Jammy (Jamaria): ? : ?
The utterly useless residential advisor who has yet to say anything important or friendly (other than hello) to any of us
Saturday night we went to Veggie Katie’s room & drank before attempting to go to the pub, but all the pubs were really packed to we had one drink then went back to the house. Unfortunately the house has no common area so we dragged chairs into the hall & chatted there for a while before w all went to bed at about 10:30!
Yesterday (Sunday) some more peeps moved in, there’s Cat(erina) from Worthing (which is just down the road) who is here with her boyfriend & they’re both doing the same course! And there’s some more peeps on the top floor but they seem to be ignoring us so never mind. Parents came & took me out for lunch & Dad was muchly foul tempered again, so it was quite a relief to get rid of him, tho I think I may miss me mam, not yet tho. Went for a potter round campus with John & Claire trying toget the internet sorted, but failed. So came back here where we played cards & then everyone returned to there own rooms & I got myself some dinner (so far Chen & I are the only people who have actually cooked) then rang Rob. Was good to chat to Rob (well, I got him to phone me so it was free), we kinda rant at each other & let off steam & we both know that neither of us are getting at each other at all, so I feel calmer now. Also got Mark to phone me, I needed to talk to peeps, going a bit stir crazy since freshers week hasn’t started yet & there seems to be no-one worth talking to. Oh well things might cheer up today since stuff starts with the Engineering department & I can register with the uni so I can use their computer rooms!
I need to get fairy lights & a cosy bedside light in my room because the overhead light in here is a strip light type thing & it’s really clinical & harsh…I need warmer friendlier lights. I’ve got a hook for my net tho now, so my bed feels far more like mine.
I’ll go away & stop rambling now tho….
