Your teaching position will, of course, remain yours if you desire to keep it. As you well know, Phinneas Black was more than capable in keeping his social status, as well as keeping up with his position as Headmaster.
He is my Godson. I don't think he'd be too keen to the idea of me adopting him, but I would like to have him remain the heir to the Black name and estate.
... has a certain reputation that the social circles in the Wizarding world have grown accustomed to. Nobody will deny that he is your Godson, and that he has all the rights and privileges of your own child while you are alive.
But to transfer heredity is not something the Ministry can do lightly. Even through adoption, his blood...
His magic, his blood, his parents blood - is a lot purer and stronger than any of my ancestors ever was.
If I do this; if I take my place as the Lord of the Black family, I expect my freedom to be absolute. I have no qualms with hosting parties, entertaining your foreign guests, and generally taking my place in society. But if they transgress on my beliefs, I retain the right to treat them as I see fit within the laws set by the Ministry.
I was not responsible for that, Sirius. If I could go back and change things, you know that I would. The Ministry was wrong to accuse you, wrong not to listen to your appeals, and wrong to persecute you after your escape.
After you disappeared, many changes were put in place dealing with how the Ministry treats prisoners.
I'm just glad you were able to return so we could...
... Black? You're not putting it on your ring finger?
Pardon my rudeness, but I'm not stupid, Minister. I will not marry myself to the Black family tree. Accepting the responsibility is one thing. Binding myself to the laws of the tree is another entirely. Even if the Ministry grants me my freedom, the laws of the Black heritage have another set of rules entirely.
I'll take my position for as long as I am alive. But there ends my responsibility to this family.
... my nephew, correct?
*sigh*
And what else do you expect of me? What about my position at Hogwarts?

Once it's on, it never comes off...
