She was so cold and so still, but she looked so alive. It seemed wrong that she could appear that way when she was several hours past the point of no return. The waxy pallor, the shadows on her skin of bruises that would never come to full bloom…
He was stuck here with her, waiting until night fell again.
He’d already been sick several times in the corner of the crypt where he’d taken refuge for the day, overheated by the sun outside and sickened by the thing he’d done in the heat of battle, in the throes of the rage that overtook him now when he was locked in combat.
She’d spooked him, the one he’d sworn to protect…the girl he’d never seen before that night.
Sassy’s blood sustained him, but he had to be careful how often he fed on her and sometimes if he used too much magic, it burned through his reserves too quickly. He got hungry easily and she’d been right there…
She was another vampire’s victim, just another meal to be had. He’d killed that vampire…and taken her for himself, lost in adrenaline and bloodlust as she touched his arm and he turned, grabbing for the vessel of warmth and sinking his teeth in.
The worst part wasn’t the killing. It wasn’t holing up in a crypt when dawn came too quickly and nearly killed him with the blinding agony of those first rays of sunlight. It wasn’t even thoughtlessly biting his wrist and feeding her in hopes that he could undo what he’d done…that maybe it wouldn’t be like it was with a normal vampire. He wasn’t a normal vampire after all…
No, that wasn’t the worst part, not even sitting here with the corpse, the reminder of what he’d done.
The worst part of it was that it hadn’t worked. She was still dead, and he had still killed an innocent person.
He was a killer.
