Pain is a warning that something's wrong
I pray to God that it won't be long
Do ya wanna go higher?
Even with what he knew about vampires, he was still surprised that it hurt so badly.
The bite stung like a bitch, but it was the feeding that hurt more. Agony, searing for a moment before turning ice cold. Deadly cold, the chill wind of death blowing down his neck and through his body with a speed that terrified him, the fear only making him colder.
He was breathing snow, and then he wasn’t breathing hardly at all.
Blood was rushing in his ears, but it brought him no heat and it was fading quickly. His eyes were open and sightless, blind to everything but the end. Gravestones, dirt, grass…beneath them, empty shells of human detritus he was going to join. It was better than the alternative, really…as human a death as his kind were blessed to have. He could come back, maybe even see her again…
She was there, too.
Lethal, graceful, beautiful. She had two of them on her and she was fending them off with an ease only she possessed. It didn’t matter that she tripped over a headstone or fumbled reaching for her stake, she knew her flaws well enough make them work to her advantage. The faltering grip turned sloppy and relentless with brute strength, twisting with all her impossible dexterity as she fell so that the vampire lunging for her throat fell on that deadly force she hurled at him.
Watching her brought some warmth back to him…and stopped him from calling out for help. He’d only distract her, only get her killed.
He could die this way, with Sassy’s face as the last thing he’d see. After all…he’d be back.
It was his last thought before he drew in his final breath…and lost the chance to expel it when the vampire’s bleeding wrist was suddenly forced against his mouth…and he knew. He knew, the moment he swallowed reflexively and the first noxious taste of it touched his tongue…as his dying body latched on and drank.
There was no coming back…the Darkness had staked its claim on one more victim.
