Well that's too bad that you 'don't get along' with Ana. I was the one who coined the term "dustbunnies" on that forum. I had to give up my membership about 2 years ago ( Read more... )

Paysites and the Homeless lefin1 November 28 2006, 17:20:06 UTC
This post ended up in and odd place.

Actually, I think Ana is a great artist. She just misunderstood me. I'm not too worried about that. She doesn't have to like me. I expect artists to be temperamental. After all, I'm an artist too. I've been on both sides of the coin, with the paysite thing. I know how it works. I helped Shannon get her paysite going, with tech support and being part of the content. But, that was only a small contribution to what she has done and continues to do. It takes a lot of hard work. Both Shannon and Ana deserve a lot of credit for what they have achieved. I wish them both much success in their endeavors.

I do get paid a small amount for taking care of "Miss Clairevoyant" by the State. A close friend of mine works for an advocacy agency for the disabled. I don't get paid for helping out homeless people. I just do it out of the goodness of my heart. It would be nice to get paid, but I'm not doing it for the money. I do believe that more social programs would benefit these people. Not as a free ride, but as a safety net. Some of them are all messed up on drugs or alcohol, but not all of them. Some are just victims of society, and just need a little boost. Some of them have mental problems, but I think everyone has mental problems, in some form or another. It's just the degree in which all these factors affect their lives that makes the difference. I can't do a whole lot about poverty in the rest of the world, but I can help out people in my own neighborhood. In doing so, I think it improves the quality of life for everyone.

Sorry about the dial-up thing. All of my video posts must be irritating. I couldn't watch videos at all when I was on dial-up.

Ha!
That post went from my E-mail, so it landed as a new header.
Don't be concerned about all the You-tube posts. :-)
I get fwds. all the time since it seems everyone I know has some form of broadband. Someday, I hope. Fiber runs all over the place, and Verizon won't turn it on. Some poorly planned rollout on their part, and just living up to the promise they made our govenor. Snakes.

You can get broadband by satellite dish. It's a weird dual dish setup. One side is for TV and the other is for internet. Here's Direct TV's version.

I have checked the various providers, and "wildblue" is the best deal for direct up and down satellite service. Some of the others use a phone line to send out the request, then send back on a satellite. Lag time is too high. But WB is costly and has limits on useage, downloads, etc. Plus you have to sign up for a year. I am hoping that something else may appear, like Wi-max. I don't watch TVee, so I won't pay for it.

On the other hand I spend so much time on-line lately, maybe it would be worth gettin WB. Just can't make up my mind. heh.

What about cable?

I live 5 miles out of town, and 3 miles from the cable end. There isn't enough density to get cable here, and there's been cable for at least 19 years. It's Adelphia, gone bankrupt, now owned by Time/Warner. I am surrounded by wealthy homeowners who all have satellite Tv, and I'm not sure what the internet usage is. I have been approached to set up a subscriber satellite broadband system for the neighbors, but I cannot put that together without capital, and I seriously down't want to work for someone else again. I guess I have had enough hassles, and these people would be pounding on my door if the system went down.

What has happened where I live is that wealthy retired people fron Conn, and Mass, and NY. have bought up overpriced land, then had non-local contractors build rediculous oversized housing. When I built in 1990, I had 4 neighbors, and the lot sizes were 6 to 30 acres. I have 6. Now the lots are 2-3 acres. The town just passed a sub-division law that will permit, if not mandate, lot sizes as small as 1/3 acre. The developement is terrible, and many people who were local, have sold out and moved further up the coast where land is still reasonable. Guess I sound like an 'old buzzard', but I am not going to sell out, which means that someday, SOMEONE will have one hell of a valuable piece of property.

I have thought about selling the place with lifetime tenancy, that's how much people want the land. Very sad to see. Of course, it is nothing like where you live. I suspect the nearest example would be what I hear happened in N. California, where family farms and vinyards got cut into pie pieces worth millions. It is amazing what the ratio is of coastal density vs. the midwest.
And I can throw a snowball and hit salt water...

Rant alert! Ha.

Dang! That sounds like a nice piece of property! Have you thought of raising penguins?

Seriously, I'd like to visit Maine.

Hey! Do you know the Kennedy's?

Bummer about the internet slowness. I spend too much time on this thing to not have broadband.

I hate all the developement around here. I keep asking, "What happens when it's ALL developed?
