So my school put on a production of Into the Woods via Downstage (the student production company). I saw the show and, to be honest, it was relatively mediocre. There were some VERY unfortunate mis-directed moments and generally the talent just wasn't there.
BUT. Into the Woods is one of my favorite musicals of all time. It might be my favorite.
As I was watching the show, I realized that what's so beautiful about Into the Woods is that every moment in that show is a metaphor for a turning point in your life. Anyone can watch Into the Woods and find themselves in a character or a song, and it changes every time you see it, depending on where you are in your life. Usually these moments come with copious amounts of tears.
There are moments in the show that you'll only really get once in your life. You might understand what the other songs are about, but you'll only really feel these moments once - and that's when you're going through what the song's talking about.

And you think of all the things you've seen
And you wish that you could live in between.
Right now I'm stuck in this awkward phase between adult and child. I want to go do amazing things and I have the ability to. But once I get there, I realize it's scary being an adult and a part of me wishes I could run back to my parents and the life I had before - that is, the life of a child. But the tragic thing is that you really can't live in between. The part of my life where I could stay away from what's scary and intimidating is gone now.
So yes, this song made me weep last night.
I wasn't able to find video of this, but in the second act, Cinderella and her Prince (who has cheated on her at this point) confront each other in the woods. Cinderella tells him that she knows he cheated on her and the two realize that it's over between them.
It's such a wonderfully sad moment, as for the entire first act, the Prince has gone searching for Cinderella and the two were happily married at the end. It was every girl's dream.
As the two part, the Prince sweetly says "I will always love the princess who ran away".
And Cinderella responds "And I the handsome prince."
Because in that moment that they were the prince and princess falling in love, everything they felt was legitimate and wonderful. But you realize that really, the two aren't meant for each other, despite having a literal fairy tale romance. And they leave each other, saying, more or less, in their final moment, "It's okay". It's okay it didn't work out, because the moment of feeling like Cinderella at the ball was wonderful, even if it wasn't meant to last.
