Book Recs?

Well, so. We've finally received our first utility bills from the city, which means that we can prove we are actually residents. Which means we can get library cards. Which means I can actually read a book that I haven't read before.

Problem is, I have NO IDEA of any titles or authors I'd like to possibly check out.

Help?

Some authors/books/series I have really enjoyed in the past are:

Terry Brooks, particularly the first two Shannara series.
Ender's Game and Pastwatch: the Redemption of Christopher Columbus by Orson Scott Card (though the rest of his books have been hit and miss)
J.R.R. Tolkien, the Lord of the Rings
Gaston LeRoux, Phantom of the Opera
Victor Hugo, Lès Miseràbles and Hunchback of Notre Dame
Michael Crichton- a bunch of his, actually.
Dean Koontz, Watchers
C.J. Cherryh, the Chanur Saga
C.S. Lewis, the Chronicles of Narnia
Wilbur Smith, River God

As you can see, I'm rather fond of the fantasy/sci-fi genres. I'm not opposed to a series, but I much prefer it keep itself to a trilogy (which is kind of my problem with Terry Brooks anymore). Four books if the concept AND plot are really freaking awesome. Five books is starting to push it. If you get up to six books, I begin to feel you're just milking the fandom (which is a legitimate business strategy, I understand. But still. :|). I'm in the mood for something captivating, and fresh. (That doesn't mean new per se, just... fresh.)

Anyway, since I know there are a lot of bookworms on my f-list I thought I'd shoot this out and see what I got. I'm open to trying new genres and such as well. Thanks!

oh, and just as added information, some stuff I have disliked:
Terry Goodkind, the Sword of Truth novels. Too much sex, not enough plot.
Terry Brooks, anything written after Talismans of Shannara. Get a new idea, dude. Oh yeah, and new names I can pronounce, kthx.
The latter end of Harry Potter, honestly. I read it cuz I wanted to know what happened to the secondary characters. Mains must be interesting people too.

lol I usually forget stuff I dislike. But anyway.
