-The Beginning-
In a small coastal village, two healthy infant boys were born to very proud parents. The boys, named Shinmen and Kayen, grew up in a community of fishermen and tradesmen. Their father, Miyamoto, was a former soldier and was head of the local defense committee. Anya, their mother, worked at the local tavern. Shinmen, or "Shin," as he preferred to be called, was a rambunctious youth and was often found in situations of great personal danger to himself. Kayen was much more the reserved child and preferred to act accordingly. Trade vessels were a common sight along the shores of the fishing communities. Just as common a sight was Shin sneaking aboard the various merchant ships to bombard the crew with questions and touch everything in his reach.
Shin: Hey, mithtuw? *tugs on the sailor's pantleg*
Sailor: *looking around, confused* W-wha... oh. *hangs his head, sighing* It's you.
Shin: Ith it twue that thailorth kill peepuw?
Sailor: Ugh... hey, look, kid. I have a lot of work to do. This isn't a safe place for children.
Shin: *eyes wide* ...are you bithy... kiwwing peepuw? *hops excitedly*
More often than not, a messenger was sent down from the ship to have someone come back to drag Shin down from the rigging or haul him up from the cargo bay. Kayen was more concerned with the assorted adventurers that stopped in to the tavern for a drink. Rugged, bloodied warriors often barged their way into the small establishment and began making outrageous claims of having slain mythical creatures and demanded liquid tribute to their greatness. Wanting to hear their great tales, Kayen poured and served and fed the heroes until they would sit him down and regale him with their mighty past conquests. These tales usually were repeated verbatim to the family at dinner time, much to their chagrin. Shin would cackle, Miyamoto would chase Kayen and Anya would just place her face in her hands and sigh.
The young boys soon grew to young men. Kayen had joined his father in the defense committee and quickly rose through the ranks. He had also picked up a few magical abilities from hanging around the constant flow of adventurers. He was particularly skilled at the healing arts and was often found practicing on his self-inflicted injuries. Shin had taken to sailing a small fishing boat with a couple of his friends. Most outings ended in the three boys returning with blackened eyes and bruises speckled over large portions of their bodies. Shin was a good commander, but very over-excited and easy to anger, leading to tremendous fist-fights and wasted time at sea. Kayen refused to help Shin in any way, claiming he was "above such childish antics."
The coming series of events would change the Dendralis family for generations upon generations.
