Thanks for the sympathy and commiseration and advice in re. my last post, y'all. I appreciate it. *loves*

I'm feeling twitchy and REALLY need something to tear me away from refreshing fail_fandomanon every couple of minutes, so how about some drabble/ficlet prompts? Nothing too detailed, please - say, an object plus character or pairing. Can be holiday-themed or ( Read more... )

“Hey, you folks want these last two slices of pie?” the waitress called out from the kitchen. She set a Styrofoam box on the ledge.

“Thanks, Earla. You have a Merry Christmas.” Russ took the container and hurried to catch up with Clare.

She was standing on the sidewalk, gazing up at the sky. It was unusually clear, and even with the light pollution from the town, Russ could see hundreds of stars. “Wow.”

She smiled, but kept her face tilted upwards. “I know, isn’t it beautiful? It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old,” she sang softly, then exhaled deeply. “As much as it wears me out, I love Christmas. It always make me feel so full of hope.” She lowered her chin to see Russ watching her intently. The warmth in his gaze was reflected in the heat that suffused her cheeks. “Don’t be too much of a Scrooge, okay? Maybe Kevin’ll invite you to spend Christmas with his family.”

His eyes crinkled as he smiled. “He already has. As has Mark, and Eric, and Duane, and even Harlene.”

She laughed. “Good. I hope you take them up on it. All of them.”

He chuckled. “They’ll have to roll me into the station on a hand truck after all that Christmas cheer.” He handed her the Styrofoam container. “I know we promised no gifts this year, but here. Merry Christmas.”

“Cheater.” She smiled softly, despite herself. “Merry Christmas, Russ.” She laid her hand on his arm and squeezed. “I’ll see you after New Year’s.”

His hand came to rest over hers for a moment, his gloved thumb stroking across her knuckles. “Merry Christmas, Clare.”

I LOVE EEEEET! :D

You've got to think the whole town was rooting for them to get together, even Earla with her rhubarb pie. You've got their voices perfectly, too.
