THIS MASTERPIECE I wanted to talk about this album so bad!! Domoto Tsuyoshi (re)surrected project “ENDLICHERI✰ENDLICHERI” now under the name of “ENDRECHERI”. It actually has a meaning though, something like:
END: referring to the previous project that ENDed.
RE: (RE)BORN. The (RE)turn of it.
CHERI: People used to call him by that.
Hybrid Funk it’s the first album under the name of ENDRECHERI and since the very first track we are submerged in a world of ancient fishes, space ships and funky grooves. The rearranged version of an old instrumental track ENDLICHERI✰ENDLICHERI (now named END RE CHERI) with its different variations of rythms and styles, makes it the perfect introduction and also, serves as a summary of the journey.
The album moves in waves: from END RE CHERI (the introduction song) we move to the title album track, HYBRID FUNK, a neo soul song with a slow/ moderate groove and for the first time he introduces rap into his work; then we change to the riotous MusiClimber just in time to descend to the simple and nostalgic 去な宇宙 (Inner Space) in which we can appreciate Tsuyoshi’s mellow voice. Upbeats songs like Crystal Light and Ancient fish and also spacey 80’s inspired tunes like YOUR MOTHER SHIP and HYBRID ALIEN are also present and because it’s Cheri’s World, of course his mascot also makes act of presence in 舌(ベロ) VENOM (Tongue Venom).
Two MV were made for this album: HYBRID FUNK & HYBRID ALIEN. The reason I bought the Limited Edition A was of course because it includes the HYBRID FUNK MV, its making and an uncut version of the MV. For this video, Tsuyoshi cut very long long hair and tried nine different styles before reaching its final state while dancing erotically to the song. While HYBRID ALIEN, a collab with Yamashita Tatsuro in the guitar, included in the Limited Edition B it’s a fun MV with an interesting dance, aliens and ancient fishes.
The thing I’ve discovered about funk music it’s that it tend to be so repetitive with catchy rythms but not in an annoying kind of way(?)
The lyrics are mainly about life, death and also has some erotic elements in the vocabulary. According to him, he just likes to play with erotic elements lmao
Anyway, what I like about this album it’s that it’s so dense and has so many nuances I never get bored of it, it’s so addictive but I think that’s the hybridness we should expect since the moment we read the album title.
