Generally I am one of those ahead-of-the game, super planner brides. I've booked all my major vendors already, and most of the minor ones. I have invites mapped out and am already working on extras like out-of-town bags. I'm hoping that by Xmas, I'll have even more of the details nailed down like centerpieces and decor.
I do have one area that I'm totally dragging my feet on though.
Music! It's not that I'm not excited about the music parts of the ceremony and reception. On the contrary, it's so important to T. and I that I am just paralyzed with indecision. I grew up in a musical family, played violin as a child, sang in choirs and choruses for years, worked as a DJ in college and even wrote about music for a few years as a journalist. T. also harbors a deep love of music. So yeah, this is crucial.
We've talked about hiring a classical guitarist or possibly a trio for the ceremony. Have I done that yet? No. And the reception? In my fantasy land, we'd hire the kind of band that brings down the house and gets everyone from the 2-year-olds to the 92-year-olds sweating it out on the dance floor. But that is not at all in our budget.
Enter the wedding DJ. This is the stuff my nightmares are made of: a wacky guy in a tux with a smarmy voice, playing YMCA and turning on a smoke machine for ambiance. **deep, full-body shudder** I would love to have a hipper breed of DJ, the kind with an actual record collection that s/he hauls around in boxes and can actually spin them 1s and 2s. However, most of these folks are not down with wedding DJing. I know, because I've asked about half a dozen of them.
There's always the iPod DJ option, where T. and I can express our most anal playlist-crafting desires. But this makes me sweat a little too: the technology, while life-changing and fabulous, isn't exactly the most reliable. Plus with the nature of our venue, we'd have to rent a PA and speakers. And we'd need someone to babysit the thing for us. Since most of our guests are having to take a plane to get to our wedding, we'd rather not put them to work, you know?
So we'll continue to search for that elusive breed: the cool wedding DJ. If you know of anyone in the South Florida area that's willing to travel to the Keys, please let me know!
